Apostasy    Adrienne Dyane Lewis

We watch a new life begin

huddled together in the crowded pew,

What God has gathered together, let no man put asunder.

There is never a good time

to talk about it. It is too hard

to form the words, let them slip

from between your lips and kiss

the cheek of the person you’ve promised

to be faithful to. Judas

must have known this feeling. At the last supper,

he must have stuffed himself with bread

to keep from spilling wine

and his secret: I don’t believe in this anymore.
