The Biology Club is almost constantly doing something.
While we are an academic club, we do much more than just
educational programs. Here is a list of things that we
have done in the past or are planning for the future.
Social Programs: This is the best part of
the the
Biology
Club. We do a ton of stuff just for the
fun of it. Every year (at least once) we go
CAMPING and possibly canoeing if the weather
cooperates. This is always a blast and is a great
way to relax and get to know fellow students outside
of class. We also have our yearly end-of-the-year
cookout where we get a couple of grills going and
end up stuffing ourselves in between classes. Then
there is the always fun "Bio-Bowling Night" which
should be self explanatory. We also participate in
fun on-campus events like Homecoming and Pi-Games.
Environmental Programs: We think it is
important to do our part to help the environment. Every year the
club participates in
Adopt-a-Highway along our stretch of Bay Road in
front of SVSU. This year we also
had the opportunity to clean up the beach at Tawas
Point State Park as part of the International Beach
clean-up day.
Volunteer Programs: The Biology Club does
what it can to make the
community
a better place. In the past we have volunteered at
the Eastside Soup kitchen in Saginaw and at Habitat
for Humanity. Last year we also organized a canned
food drive among all the academic clubs on campus to
benefit the Eastside Soup Kitchen. We also have an
active Relay for Life team each year to raise money
for the American Cancer Society.
Academic Programs: And of course, there
is the educational part of
the club. Every year we
try to bring in at least one guest speaker to
discuss interesting topics in biology. We are
currently working on trying to bring in speakers to
discuss police forensics and neural diseases. If you
have any other ideas, we would love to hear about
it. We also go to scientific conferences like the
one at Argonne National Laboratory near Chicago.
These are always a lot of fun. We also promote
academics by handing out hundreds of dollars of
scholarship money to
deserving students every year.
Outside Opportunities: The
Biology Department at SVSU receives all sorts of
information regarding opportunities for students.
Most of the time the only students that actually
find out about this stuff are the Biology Club
members. Just within the past year, several members
of our club got well paying jobs collecting
biological samples from the water near the Harbor
Beach power plant. Two members were employed by Bay
City Schools developing an educational website.
Without the club, no one would ever have found out
about this stuff. Join now or get left behind.
