SVSU OLLI Theatre Goup Schedule 2008

(004) Western Comedy at the Purple Rose Theatre
Hard on the heels of Escanaba in Love, Jeff Daniels introduces his first western, Panhandle Slim & the Oklahoma Kid.  This winsome comedy tells the fateful tale of a prairie showdown between a vagrant outlaw and a singing cowboy.  This World Premiere features original songs, as well as scoundrels, six-guns, and a horse named Buttermilk.  Prior to the 3 p.m. show, we will tour the Chelsea Milling Company, which has been producing Jiffy Baking Mixes since 1930.  The company is considered a “complete manufacturer” as they store the wheat, mill the wheat into flour, use that flour in the mixes, and even make their own boxes.  After the factory tour, we will enjoy lunch at the Common Grill.  (Should you prefer to shop rather than tour the Jiffy plant, the motorcoach can drop you off downtown.)  The trip includes round trip deluxe motorcoach transportation from SVSU, the play, the factory tour, lunch at the Common Grill, and snacks on the bus.

Wednesday, August 20, 8:30 A.M. -7 P.M.
Price: $85 Members; $105 Non-Members

Saturday, September 27, 8:00 P.M. The Foreigner:
This comedy to be performed at Midland Center for the Arts deals with Charlie, a shy man who hears way more than he wants to after having his buddy tell everyone he can’t understand English! The next thing he knows, he finds himself mixed up in some of the zaniest situations he could imagine. I guarantee this one will have you laughing so hard you will cry. An optional dinner at China Palace, 1908 S. Saginaw Rd., Midland, will begin at 6:00. 20 tickets will be available at a price of $15.

(007)  Say Goodnight Gracie at the Gem Theatre & DIA
This hit Broadway play invites you to spend a hilarious, heart-warming afternoon in the uplifting company of the world’s favorite and funniest centenarian George Burns.  This Gem Theatre production marks this critically acclaimed show’s Michigan premier.  We will begin our day in Detroit with free time at the Detroit Institute of Arts.  We then head to the Gem’s beautiful Century Grille for lunch.  Our seats for the show are on the main floor for the 2 p.m. performance.  The trip includes roundtrip deluxe motorcoach transportation from SVSU; tickets to the show; lunch; admission to the DIA; and snacks on the bus.

Wednesday, October 15, 8 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.
Price:  $98 Members; $118 Non-Members

Friday, October 17, 8:00 P.M. Singin’ in the Rain:
Based on the MGM film, this musical takes place in 1927 when silent film star Don Lockwood is breaking into “talkies.” Because of concern that his leading lady’s voice is too grating, the studio dubs her voice with a chorus girl’s. The show’s a huge success, but during the encore Don sabotages the plan to let the chorus girl, Kathy, sing backstage while the leading lady, Lina, lip-synchs. Kathy becomes a hit and a romance between Don and her blossoms. 20 tickets for the show at the Midland Center for the Arts are available at $26. An optional dinner will occur before the show at D’Alessandro Villa, 801 E. Wackerly, Midland.

(008)  Radio City Christmas Spectacular
This year marks the debut of a whole new Spectacular, which has been specifically designed to play in large venues.  It will include dramatic lighting effects; breathtaking imagery; flying sequences; new musical compositions; and an array of glamorous costumes.  Of course, it will also include high-energy, tap-infused Rockette performance numbers.  We purchased group tickets on the day they went on sale, so we have second through sixth row seats in the lower bowl.  The outing includes roundtrip deluxe motorcoach transportation from SVSU; tickets to the show; lunch at Fishbones in downtown Detroit; and snacks on the bus.
Saturday, November 22, 10:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m.
Price:  $129 Members; $149 Non-Members
