(101) The Man in Black: Johnny Cash
This new course will examine the life and career of one of America’s greatest musical icons, Johnny Cash. Cash holds the distinction of being the only artist to have been inducted into the Hall of Fame for Songwriters, Country Music, and Rock and Roll. The course will use a wide range of photographs to document Cash’s life as well as a great deal of performance footage from every phase of his remarkable 48-year career. The instructor is Gary (Dr. J) Johnson.

(102) Fire Up the Grill: Summertime Cooking at the Bay City Country Club
Calling all grill masters! We are offering a cooking class to help you hone your grilling skills so you can impress your guests during your outdoor cook outs. The class will be held at the Bay City Country Club which has a large outdoor patio overlooking the golf course. The class will cover: grilling with charcoal and creating rubs; grilling with gas and creating marinades; and smoking using wood chips and creating brine. Each session will include chicken, beef or pork, and seafood. Side dishes and desserts will also be prepared. Of course, you will have the opportunity to enjoy all your creations. The class will be led by the Club’s chef, Dean Schulz. This is sure to be a fun class.

(103) Watercolors, Beyond the Basics: Outdoor Painting
This class is for those who have completed our introductory class, or have previously taken another watercolor class. Our focus will be on painting nature outdoors and capturing the beauty of the SVSU campus. You will learn more advanced techniques of drawing in perspective and painting landscapes to more up close subjects, i.e. flowers. Class sessions are longer to allow plenty of time for in-class painting. Sessions will be held indoors if the weather doesn’t cooperate. The class will be led by Rosemary Hayes, professional artist & art instructor. You will receive a list of materials to bring to class. The class is limited to 15.

Have you considered buying something on E-Bay, but were concerned about the honesty of the seller? In this class, you will learn about this very popular website and how you can use it to find just what you are looking for. We will cover how to use the site and the built-in security features. The session will be held in a computer lab so that you will be able to find specifically what you are looking for. The class will be led by Gary Holik. Selling on E-Bay is much better than having a garage sale. You will attract potential buyers who are looking for exactly what you are trying to get rid of! Now that you know how to buy something on E-Bay, we will teach you how to sell something. We will cover how to use HTML codes to make your item stand out, how to deal with bad checks, postage, and other issues involved with selling on E-Bay. The class limit is 15. (106) Genealogy: Introduction to Online Resources
Join OLLI member George McPeak for a three-part genealogy "lab" which will emphasize computer genealogy, Internet and online resources. In the first session, you will receive a brief review of sources of information and techniques for getting additional information from relatives. The remaining sessions cover online local and area records; census records; Social Security records; state and national sites; and international sites. The class will be held in a computer lab and each participant will have a work station. Basic computer knowledge is desirable to navigate and use the resources presented. A free genealogical database will be provided. The class limit is 15.

(108) Golf Clinic for Beginners & Advanced Beginners
Since you can only spend so much time reading books & watching CNN, enjoy your retirement more by learning how to golf with other OLLI members! This course will be offered at the Bay City Country Club, just down the road from SVSU on Davis Road. It will be led by the Club’s assistant golf pro, John Nowosatki. The five-session course will include an orientation and cover putting/chipping, and full swings with irons and woods. You’ll play nine holes during the last session. The price includes range balls for each session, and your golf and cart during the last session. Sign up early, the class maximum is 15.

(109) Heraldry: Its History and Art
In this course, we will discuss the history of heraldry (coats of arms) in the Western world. Using the date 1126 as a starting point, we will cover the development, rules governing usage, the art of displaying arms and its many uses then and now. There will be two lectures, static displays, books, examples of arms and plenty of time for questions and answers. The class will be led by Ken Smith, who lived in Europe for 30 years and retired from the U.S. Army after 34 years of service.

(110) Great Political Thinkers and Theories
This course will cover the great political thinkers and theories in western civilization. Thinkers such as Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, Aquinas, Locke, Rousseau, Marx, Strauss, and Rawls will be covered. We will explore enduring political questions. For example, what is justice? What is the best type of government? Who should rule and why? Each of these thinkers have a different answer to these questions which we will examine and weigh against each other. The class will be led by SVSU political science professor Lee Trepanier.

(111) Alexander Hamilton
Alexander Hamilton was one of the most significant Founders, arguably second only to George Washington as most influential in getting this country established on a solid, positive foundation. He served as the first secretary of the treasury, and was considered by some to have been, in effect, prime minister in Washington. Yet, he had enemies who regarded him as a dangerous man with Napoleonic ambitions and a self-centered threat to justice and freedom. This course will cover the early years and Revolutionary War experience; the establishment of the new country; the Washington Administration and the founding of the party system; and the last years and legacy. The class will be led by Northwood University history professor, John Pafford.

(112) An Outdoor Sampler at the Chippewa Nature Center
We are pleased to partner with the Chippewa Nature Center in Midland to offer a class which highlights the expertise of three of their staff members. In session one, Kyle Bagnall, the center’s historian, will discuss Michigan logging and Native American uses of plants. You will also visit the center’s wigwam. In the second session, naturalist Karen Breternitz, will cover fungi and how other plants react to their presence. In the final session, naturalist Janea Little will discuss landscaping for wildlife and you will tour the butterfly and rain gardens. Each session will include some time in the classroom and some time outside, so please wear comfortable shoes.

(113/114) Saginaw Valley Wildlife Boating Adventure

This class will give you the opportunity to relax and savor the beauty that surrounds you and learn more about the ecology of one of Michigan’s largest watersheds, and one of the few in the world that flows in a northerly direction. We’ll take a trip through the "Everglades" of Michigan with Wil Hufton III, owner of Johnny Panther Quests Adventure Trips. We’ll travel through one of the largest Bald Eagle habitats and migratory flyways in the Midwest. Hufton has 40 years experience related to the ecology of the area and has a first hand understanding of what is happening to our watershed. Sign up quickly, each session is limited to 10 participants. The trip departs from the Lee Street boat ramp in Saginaw.(You will recieve a map)

(115) Memory and Aging: Get the Facts
What changes are part of normal aging? When is there a reason to be concerned? This one-day session will cover: normal aging changes; memory and how it works; Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia; and tips for cognitive vitality and brain health as we age. Our leader, Heddie Sumner, is a registered nurse, and the Director of Education and Resource Development with Senior Services/Midland County Council on Aging. Bring a bag lunch or join others in the class at the SVSU food court.

(116) Fun With Love Poetry
Here’s a chance to enjoy poetry that fits into one or more categories: erotic love, celebration, philia love & lost love. Sessions will provide poetry recitations and conversations about poetry that reflect upon beautiful human relationships. What do Browning, Dickinson, Cummings, Robinson, and Frost say about love? Bring along your best friend and your own favorite poems to share. The discussion will be led by retired SVSU professor Bob Meadows.
