(005) Marshall Historic Home Tour
Join your OLLI friends on a day-trip to what Michigan Living Magazine calls the best "Historic Home Tour" in the state of Michigan. Each year on the weekend after Labor Day, Marshall opens its doors to thousands of visitors. In addition to touring eight historic homes, you can stroll the tree lined streets; listen to choirs, quartets, dulcimers and brass bands; visit an antique or arts & crafts show; shop at a farmer’s market; visit the town’s museums; and purchase snacks from street vendors. A highlight of this trip will be visiting a 16,000 square foot, $7.5 million dollar home. Plus, prepare yourself for a feast as we enjoy Schuler’s famous Sunday Brunch.

(006) Rock & Roll Adventure with Dr. J.
If you have been attending Gary Johnson’s OLLI Rock and Roll classes, you don’t want to miss this overnight trip! We’ll spend the first afternoon at the amazing Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. You’ll have lots of time to explore this huge museum on the waterfront which includes thousands of priceless artifacts. We’ll also enjoy a docent-led tour to gain more insight into this unique attraction. That evening, we’ll indulge in a three-course dinner at Fat Fish Blue, a fun New Orleans-style restaurant. After dinner, you may return to the hotel or listen to a local or national touring artist at the restaurant. We’ll stay right downtown at the beautiful Radisson Inn. After breakfast at the hotel, a step-on guide will join us and we’ll go on a one-hour city tour. Then it’s off to Detroit to visit the Motown Museum and have lunch at Traffic Jam & Snug, a trendy downtown Detroit restaurant with its own bakery . After lunch, we’ll roam the Motown neighborhoods via motorcoach and see such interesting sites as Diana Ross’s former home, and the mansion which Stevie Wonder bought his mom. On the motorcoach, we’ll watch historical clips and listen to music. (Dancing in the aisles is optional!) The trip will be led by Gary (Dr. J) Johnson.

(007) Say Goodnight Gracie at the Gem Theatre & DIA
It’s not often that a Broadway show can wrap you in a tender love story, delight you with an uproarious comedy, and glide you through a guided tour of an American century of entertainment, all in one memorable theatrical event. Say Goodnight Gracie is the hit Broadway play that invites you to spend a hilarious, heart-warming afternoon in the uplifting company of the world’s favorite and funniest centenarian George Burns. The Gem Theatre production marks this critically acclaimed show’s Michigan Premier.

It was a Tony nominee for Best Play and winner of the Critics Circle Award. We will begin our day in Detroit with free time at the Detroit Institute of Arts, where you will have about two hours to explore the newly remodeled treasure. We will then head to the Gem Theatre’s beautiful Century Grille for lunch which will include your choice of three entrees and dessert. Our seats for the show are on the main floor for the 2 p.m. performance.

(008) Radio City Christmas Spectacular

After staying away for two years, the Radio City Rockettes will return to Detroit this holiday season! However, this time they will be at the Joe Louis Arena, not their familiar venue, the Fox Theatre. This year marks the debut of a whole new Spectacular, which has been specifically designed to play in large venues. You will experience the magic of The Christmas Spectacular at the grandest scale ever imagined by the Radio City creative team. It will include dramatic lighting effects; breathtaking imagery; flying sequences; new musical compositions; and an array of glamorous new costumes. It will feature high-energy, tap-infused Rockette performance numbers, and breathtaking sets that will get you in the Christmas spirit. We purchased group tickets on the day they went on sale so we have fantastic seats for the 3:30 p.m. show, in the second through sixth row of the lower bowl! This outing also includes lunch at Fishbones in downtown Detroit. Fishbones was a real hit on a recent OLLI day trip - we guarantee, you won’t go away hungry. You will also have a little free time in Greektown after lunch.

(009) Grand Oak Herb Farm Christmas Excursion
The Grand Oak Herb Farm, in Bancroft, is Michigan’s largest herb farm. It offers two gift shops, 21 theme gardens, and everything from custom floral design to their own brand of potpourri. They offer dozens of teas, workshops, classes and special events throughout the year. For over 25 years they have created a haven where you can alleviate the stresses of everyday life through a love of gardening and an appreciation of the beauty found in simplicity. They have put together a holiday-theme package just for us. The morning will include demonstrations and lectures about making flavored vinegars, essential oils and bath salts. We’ll then enjoy a three-course lunch prepared by their chef with herbs from their gardens. In the afternoon, we’ll learn about the benefits of tea and different herbs, and learn how to make spicy hot cranberry tea. You will also make some Christmas potpourri which you can take home with you for the holidays. The sessions will be led by the farm’s owner Beulah Hargrove.

(201) The Wonderful World of Insects
Insects make up more than half of all living things in the world. Today there are more than a million known species of insects. This class will be a general introduction to the world of insects and their importance for human beings. We will discuss insect evolution, phylogenetics, anatomy, physiology, reproduction, development, ecology and behavior. An overview of insect pests and their management will also be covered. The SVSU teaching collection will be available and tips will be given regarding collecting, preserving and identifying insects. The class will be led by SVSU biology professor, Dave Stanton.

(202) Agriculture in the Saginaw Valley
Although our world is increasingly becoming an information-based economy, agriculture is still prominent in the Saginaw Valley. In this class, you will learn about the history of agriculture in the Saginaw Valley, including lake and soil development during the era of the glaciers. We will also cover the marketing of commodities, and how food is grown and processed. The growing trend of energy production on the farm will be examined and whether this is the "new cash crop" will be considered. The course will be led by Terry Henne, WSGW’s Farm Services Director and host of the Mid-Day Farm Show.

(203) Cancer Biology
Cancer is a general term used for diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control and are able to invade other tissues. In the U.S. and other developed countries, cancer is presently responsible for about 25% of all deaths. Latest statistics indicate that on an yearly basis more than 1.2 million new cancer causes are diagnosed in the U.S. and some 550,000 die from the disease. This class will discuss the biology of cancer, in which transformed cells display the traits of uncontrolled growth, invasion, and sometimes metastasis. We will learn about the causes of cancer, the types of cancer, properties of cancer cells, prevention techniques, treatment techniques, and current research. The class will be led by Plammoottil Cherian, an SVSU biology professor since 2006.

(204) Sustainable Agriculture: Gardening 2020
Despite Michigan’s economic downturn, the agriculture sector continues to see significant growth. In fact, agri-food and agri-energy systems employ 24 percent of all persons working in Michigan. This course will cover: how to set up and manage a basic vermiculture; how to set up and manage a basic hydroponic system that can be integrated with a vermiculture system; and the basic aspects of designing and operating a greenhouse-based food production operation in a cost-effective, energy-efficient manner. The class will be led by Edward Meisel, an SVSU biology and chemistry professor who also manages the SVSU greenhouse. Meisel is also a Master Gardener.

(205) A Trek Through the Digestive Tract: Way Stations and Points of Interest
In this class, you will explore the details of the human digestive system. Formal presentations introducing specialized vocabulary and diagrams of the mouth, esophagus, stomach, the liver and pancreas, small intestine, and large intestine will be followed by time for discussion, review and questions. Both normal functions and some pathologies will be considered. Our facilitator will be OLLI member Bob Enszer, who taught human biology in the Saginaw Public Schools for many years.

Yoga is a calming, yet exhilarating total body conditioning exercise. It is gentle enough to be practiced by those over 50, so you’ll be able to work within any limitations you may have. (210) Introduction to Sailing
If you have ever considered learning how to sail, or if it has been years since you hoisted a sail, this class may be for you. The first session will be held in the classroom, where you will learn about the parts of the boat, basic seamanship skills, and water safety. In the second session, you will join the instructor and one other participant on the water in a stable 19 foot boat. The class limit is six and you will finalize your specific sailing time for the second meeting during the classroom session. Our instructor is John Johnson. According to Joseph Pilates, the founder of Pilates, "If at the age of 30 you are stiff and out of shape, you are old. If at 60 you are supple and strong, then you are young." Pilates increases flexibility and ease of movement. This class is appropriate for the beginner or advanced beginner, however please note that most participants find it challenging. (219/220) Movement & The Anat Baniel Method

This class, which incorporates gentle movement, concentrated with attention will teach you to establish new, more efficient healthy ways to move. Learning this method, based on the work of Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais, will help you to let go of your repetitive patterns that are caused by trauma, disease, and injury. This method will help you to reduce tension in everyday life; overcome chronic pain; improve posture, coordination and self-awareness; and increase flexibility and strength. Do you enjoy games that challenge you and require you to strategize and use your memory? Bridge is one of the most organized card games, with clubs and tournaments throughout the world. If you are new to bridge or haven’t played in years, this class will give you the skills you need to begin the bridge journey. In this class, you’ll learn about the types of bridge, bidding, playing, and scoring. (225) Russian Cooking with Chef Mike at SVSU
Is there more to Russian cookery than beets, cabbage and sour cream? Russia is bigger than the U.S. and Canada combined, and its people claim more than 100 different nationalities and languages. As a result, the cuisine varies substantially. In this class, we will prepare and sample food from the Baltics to Uzbekistan. We’ll prepare some popular plates such as beef stroganoff and borscht as well as come lesser known and unusual dishes. A "hands-on" cooking class led by SVSU’s Chef Mike Stickler. Have you ever felt you should make one additional trick as declarer? Improve your bridge playing and enjoyment of the game. This eight-week series concentrates on the 2008 edition of Audrey Grant’s Diamond book "Play of the Bridge Hand". Whether you are a casual or serious player, the principles taught will improve your bridge skills. The harmonica is one of the easiest instruments to learn how to play and they are very inexpensive! Here is your chance to have some fun and learn how to quickly play a handful of songs to entertain your friends. OLLI is teaming up with the White Crow Conservatory of Music on Mackinaw in Saginaw to offer this class. Bring your own harmonica, or arrive early to purchase one at the White Crow for approximately $12 - $30. Music books will also be available for purchase. (230) Paul is Dead: Michigan and the McCartney Death Rumor
This two-session course will examine the most unusual story in the history of the Beatles. Michigan was the center of the 1969 news report regarding a rumor that Paul McCartney had been killed in an auto accident in late 1966, and that his death had been covered up for nearly three years in a conspiracy that involved the surviving Beatles. The plot included a Paul look-alike as well as a large number of clues regarding McCartney’s death that were hidden in Beatle lyrics and on album covers. The class will detail the events that resulted in the story breaking in Detroit and quickly spreading around the world. The "hidden clues" that gave credence to the rumor will be covered in both audio and video recordings. The instructor for the course is Gary (Dr. J) Johnson.

(231) Internet and E-mail
This class will give you a basic knowledge of the Internet and e-mail. Session one includes logging on, getting to an Internet address, following links, setting options, using history and favorites, and using search engines. Session two covers sending and receiving e-mails, replying, forwarding, printing, and opening attachments. Session three continues with additional Internet and e-mail info, and is a workday to practice your skills while the instructor is available to answer questions. This class is the first in a series of three designed to acquaint you with the computer, provide an idea of what it can do, and teach basic skills needed in order to use any program. A goal of this class is to help you become more comfortable with the computer. The class is geared for the new user, but also fills in the gaps and provides many tips for users who are self-taught or are a little out of practice. If you are generally comfortable with your computer, this class will help you to continue to build on your basic skills. Topics include: a Windows review; setting up and using a program; working with property boxes; the characters of space; working with and formatting objects; selecting and editing text; saving and finding what you saved; printing; deleting; the right click; and an introduction to copy and paste. The Introductory I class is required, or prior computer knowledge including the ability to use a mouse, open and close programs, basic understanding of Windows, and familiarity with a keyboard. This class focuses on saving, organizing your documents, the "right click" and working between programs (taskbar work). Topics include: saving from the computer to a portable storage device, saving from a disk drive to the computer, creating folders, moving documents, creating and using shortcuts, deleting, copy and paste, printing options, using templates, creating envelopes, using an existing document to create a new document. Prerequisites: ability to use a mouse, select, open and use menus; basic understanding of Windows and the taskbar; basic ability to use a word processor; and familiarity with the Internet. Besides your house, your car may be the next biggest item you purchase. Here’s your chance to learn how to make a more informed purchase the next time you buy or lease a new or used car. This course will help you answer these questions: Should you purchase a new or used vehicle? How can you tell if the used vehicle you’re considering is a good value or has had previous damage? How can you get the most out of your vehicle at trade-in time? How does your dealership really make money? Should I buy or lease? What is the best way to finance? (238) Irish Literature: Focus on the Remote West

This course will involve reading and discussing Irish literature based on the remote Western portion of Ireland with particular focus on Connemara and the Aran and Blasket Islands. The reading list includes a biography, a travel journal by a noted Irish author, and several poems and short stories (which will be distributed during the class). We will also watch a film depicting the challenge of living on the rocky Aran Islands. Participants should obtain and read two books: An Old Woman’s Reflections by Peig Sayers; and The Aran Island by John Millington Synge. The Aran Island book will be covered first. The course is leader is Tom Moran, a Dow Chemical attorney and Irish history and literature enthusiast.

(241) Sir Thomas Malory’s "Le Morte Darthur"
Attention early-English literature enthusiasts. In this class, we will discuss Thomas Malory’s version of the legends of King Arthur and this knights. Readings will include selections from Malory’s fifteenth-century Arthurian romances. Malory is the source of much later work in English about Arthur, including Tennyson’s "Idyll’s of the King." Please purchase a copy of Eugene Vinaver’s "Works of Malory" (second edition) for use during the class. The class will be led by SVSU English professor Basil Clark.

(242) The Life & Legend of Marilyn Monroe
In the 1950s few movie stars had the charisma and drawing power of Marilyn Monroe. Baptized Norma Jeane Baker in 1926, Monroe won a Golden Globe Award for best comedy/musical actress for Some Like it Hot. In this entertaining class led by SVSU theatre professor (and Norma Jeane fan) Steve Erickson, you will learn more about Monroe’s life including her childhood, marriages, professional relationships, and films. The class will include many film clips. The last session will be held at the Saginaw Art Museum, where we will view the exhibition "Marilyn Monroe: Life as a Legend". The course fee includes admission to the Saginaw Art Museum and the special exhibit.

(243) Couples in Retirement: Are We Having Fun Yet?
Living together in retirement fulfills a dream, and also can produce surprises, both delightful and challenging. OLLI members Pat and Tom Schomaker will team together to provide substantive content along with useable "how to" solutions in this informative, upbeat class. Pat is a state-licensed clinical social worker, with a Master of Social Work degree from U-M as well as post-graduate advanced accreditation and diplomate certifications. Tom holds a Master of Divinity degree and has been in ministry for more than 40 years. During their professional careers, they have counseled individuals, couples, presented workshops, and taught classes on relationships and personal growth.

(244) Tim McCoy: Saginaw’s Famous Cowboy
One of the most famous B-western cowboys, Tim McCoy was born in Saginaw in 1891. He served in World War I, and became an expert on the old west and Indian lore. Young and good looking, he was hired by MGM and became their silent film cowboy star in about twenty films. McCoy reached the height of his career in the 1930s. In the late 1930s McCoy toured with the circus and then assembled his own Wild West Show. In later years, he hosted a TV series on the Old West. McCoy is buried in the family plot at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Saginaw. In this class, you will learn more about the life and times of Saginaw’s native cowboy and view a couple of movies. The class will be led by local businessman and history fan, Richard Curry.

(245) The Power of the Situation
Why do "nice" people do horrible things? Are we programmed to obey authority irregardless of whether the actions coincide with our morals? In this class, we will examine situations which have led people to do things they would not have done under other circumstances. For example, we will study why Hitler successfully attracted many followers in Nazi Germany, and why bystanders who witness a beating on the street often walk right past without offering aid (the bystander effect). The class will be led by retired Delta College psychology professor and OLLI member, David Kennedy. He will use video clips to supplement the class. Come prepared for lively discussion.

(246) Iranian (Persian) History, Culture and Literature
Iran (Persia) is the most populous and the second-largest country in the Middle East, located south of the Caspian Sea and north of the Persian Gulf. Iran today is both modern and ancient with a rich history and culture. The class will be led by Moe Bidgoli, an SVSU computer science professor who grew up in a northern Province of Iran, and later attended a University in Tehran. He will use video clips, music and poetry to give you a better understanding of Iran’s history and culture.

(247) Bay County History
Three interesting areas will be covered in this class. In the first class, you’ll learn about people with Bay City connections who have achieved national prominence - from James Birney and James Davidson to Kevin Cole and Madonna. The second session examines items made in Bay City and sold throughout the world - from ships, cranes, homes, furniture, bicycles, welding machines to cigars. The last session will focus on Bay City in the headlines, including historic events and calamities like the South End fire of 1892, and prominent visitors to Bay City from Alexis de Toqueville to Barry Goldwater. The class will be led by Dave Rogers, historian and author.

(248) A Short Hisory of the Cold War
From the mid-1940s until the early 1990s, the Cold War dominated world affairs. Throughout this period, the rivalry between the U.S. and the Soviet Union unfolded and there were many major crises included the Berlin Wall, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Soviet-Afghan War and especially the Cuban Missile Crisis. In this class, SVSU history professor Eric Petersen will visit this period.

(249) The Arab-Israeli Conflict: Then and Now

This course will provide a history of the conflict since Napoleon (1797) to the present. Topics will include the origin of the conflict; Ottoman and British Palestine; the role of the U.S. in the conflict; wars since 1948; Israelis and Palestinians; diplomacy since 1948; fundamentalist Islam; Arab states; Jerusalem; Jewish settlements; current controversies; and prospects for peace. The class will be led by SVSU history professor Tom Renna. It is strongly recommended that you purchase and read "The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Middle East Conflict" by Mitchell Bard. (4th Edition).

(250) Egyptian Culture and More
Egypt is one of the most populous countries in Africa and the Middle East. The great majority of its estimated 75 million people live near the banks of the Nile River. It is famous for its ancient civilization and some of the world’s most famous monuments, including the Giza pyramid complex and its Great Spinx. This class will be led by Ramadan Gharib, who lived near the pyramids in his youth and now resides in Saginaw. He will share his Egyptian heritage, culture, historical myths and facts. You will also learn about hieroglyphs, a formal writing system used by ancient Egyptians that contained a combination of logographic and alphabetic elements.

(251) Behind Closed Doors
In this unique "class" you will visit three local businesses and learn more about how they operate and the different challenges they face. Our visits include these Saginaw companies: Central Warehouse, which has provided logistics and general public warehousing since 1910; Hi-Tech Optical, a manufacturer of prescription safety glasses; and Mobile Medical Response, a non-profit ambulance company providing services in nine counties in mid-Michigan. Afterwards, you will have an opportunity to join other OLLI members for lunch at a nearby restaurant. Your hosts are OLLI members Dan and Maggie Kempf. Note: This class is held off-campus and you are responsible for your own transportation to each site.

(252) Key Issues in the Supreme Court’s 2008 Term
In 1787 our founders signed the Constitution of the United States, and in 1791 a set of amendments became the Bill of Rights. This class will include an overview of the Constitution and also address contemporary issues which are currently being addressed by the Supreme Court. Topics of discussion will include prisoner’s rights, the death penalty, and gun control. The class will be led by SVSU’s President Dr. Eric Gilbertson, who is an attorney and teaches SVSU’s constitutional law class.

(254) The Candidates & Issues Surrounding the Upcoming Election
Every four years we have a chance to vote for the presidential candidate of our choice. Sometimes we are excited about one of the candidates, and sometimes we find ourselves voting for the "lesser of two evils". In this class, we will examine the candidates and issues that are part of this fall’s federal and state election. We will also take an historical look at candidates and issues back to the 1960s. The course will be led by John Kaczynski, the director of the SVSU Center for Public Policy & Service.
