The program is presented in partnership with the American Society of Health Informatics Managers, Inc, they are the leading association for technical professionals who specialize in Health IT (HIT). ASHIM® is a non-profit, non-governmental organization that acts in public interest by fostering professional standards in Health IT Professionals

Through its setting and enforcement of the education, examination, experience, ethics and other requirements for CHISP® certification. ASHIM awards individuals who successfully complete initial and ongoing certification requirements the right to use the CHISP® certification mark. To prepare members for certification and the Health IT profession, SVSU & ASHIM provides online training programs to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to become competent health IT professionals. The training includes instruction in computer science, the US healthcare system, medical information systems, and practical lab simulations. What is a Certified Health Informatics Systems Professional (CHISP®)?
The Certified Health Informatics Systems Professional (CHISP®) certification exam and credential designates a qualified professional capable to meet the needs of hospitals and physicians as they move to adopt electronic health care systems. CHISP professionals have demonstrated skills and knowledge in technology, and the healthcare industry, including the unique requirements formed where these two trades meet. CHISP tells the hiring public that a professional understands Health IT and both Healthcare and IT industries. CHISP professionals have certified skills that make them more secure and marketable. They “stand out” with employers and encompass a wide range of job positions that require expertise in the highly-specialized Health IT setting. For the hiring public, certified staff is always more likely to ensure physician approval and CHISP allows them to avoid hiring mistakes. The Certified Health Informatics Systems Professional (CHISP®) certification exam was first offered in January 2010 to the qualified public after completing more than twelve months of careful development and beta testing. It was developed with strong industry guidance significant in expertise, stature, and credibility via the ASHIM Industry Advisory Panel.

What if I already know that portion of the content?

he Health Professional FAST TRACK course contains just 3 Modules and is designed to be completed within 12 weeks at your own pace.   The course excludes Module 2: The US Health Care System.The Health Professional IT FAST TRACK course also contains just 3 Modules and is designed to be completed within 12 weeks at your own pace. The course excludes Module 1: Information & Computer Science.

What is included in the program fee?
The Health IT professional courses come with all fees bundled into one reduced fee. It’s everything you need to complete the 16 week course including hardcopy textbooks, login credentials for access to the online learning system, the CHISP Complete e-Study Guide, ASHIM membership, and the fully proctored CHISP exam. Successful students complete the course with a Certification of Completion Diploma and the CHISP Certification. All hard copy materials and text books are the student’s to keep.

What Qualifications do I need to become a CHISP?
The education, examination, experience, ethics and other requirements for CHISP® certification.  Experience is defined to include  the following:

1.  At least three years working IT experience which may be hardware related, software related, data related, or clinical IT training related.

2.  Or the three years experience requirement will be waived if the ASHIM member has earned a Microsoft or Cisco certification, a degree in computer science, or a diploma from an approved post secondary program.

3.  Or the three years experience requirement is waived if you complete the SVSU-ASHIM Health Information Systems Exam Prep Program. SVSU and ASHIM provides an approved online training program to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to obtain certification and become a competent health IT professional. The training includes instruction in computer science, the US healthcare system, medical information systems, and practical lab simulations. The Health IT training programs cover today’s most relevant health IT content to jump start students into high demand jobs with the skills and knowledge employers need now.

ASHIM members are required to adhere to the professional and legal ethics outlined by healthcare and other Federal and State regulations.

What is tested?
The Certified Health Informatics Systems Professional (CHISP) credential indicates that a professional has met a defined set of skills-based competencies needed by professionals in the HIT profession, regardless of the career path they choose. It is rooted in core competencies to reflect the nature of the field and the way one area of knowledge blends into another.

Heath IT: Enterprise architecture in health care and public health organizations, the use of enterprise master patient indices, record locator systems, and clinical data repositories, HIE, and RHIO in healthcare, CPOE and eRx, types of clinical decision support, clinical remote monitoring and telehealth, interoperability principles including vocabulary standards, content standards, and privacy and security standards, concepts of SMOMED, LOINC, RXNorm and HL7, principles of DICOM and PACs, RFID and of wireless concepts in healthcare, and concepts in ambulatory adoption of EMRs

Health Care Regulations: Defining the requirements for government funding of EHRs, general knowledge of industry compliance requirements, such as HIPAA, STARK, HITECH, and the OIG compliance guidance for group physician practice
Computer Science: Computer architecture, data organization, representation and structure, structure of programming languages, networking and data communication, and the basic terminology of computing

CHISP Exam Fees

Subsequent Attempt/s – CHISP exam: $49.95 (secured test proctor processing fee)

To renew the credential, the test taker must maintain annual ASHIM membership, which includes demonstrating a continued current knowledge in the healthcare industry through Continued Education Units. ASHIM provides CEU opportunities at no additional charge.

Testing Times, Locations and Other Requirements

CHISP is a high-stakes proctored exam delivered online between 12 Noon to 12 Midnight EST M-F, and from 6 p.m. to 11 EST p.m. on weekends.  It is fully secured using today’s technologies, including biometric keystroke analytics and does not require test takers to go to a testing facility. Instead, the exam may be taken from any computer with a standalone web cam and high-speed internet access.  It must be scheduled, rescheduled, or canceled 48 hours in advance.  Scheduling options are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. All test takers are required to complete a biometric enrollment process that includes capturing their photo and keystroke analytics.
