The career of medical insurance billing and coding is one of the fastest growing careers in the health care industry today. This 50-hour combined insurance billing and coding course offers the skills needed to solve insurance billing programs and teaches you how to manually file claims (using the CPI and ICD-9 manuals), complete common insurance forms, trace delinquent claims, appeal denied claims and use generic forms to streamline billing procedures and to increase current productivity/value or begin a new career.

The course covers the following areas: CPT (introduction, guidelines, evaluation and management, and speciality fields such as surgery, radiology and laboratory), ICD-9 (introduction and guidelines), basic terminology, basic claims process for medical insurance and third-party reimbursements. Students will learn how to find the service and codes using the manuals (CPT, ICD-9 and HCPCS).

Job Outlook

Job prospects should be very good. Employment of medical records and health information technicians is expected to grow much faster than average for all occupations through 2014 because of rapid growth in the number of medical tests, treatments, and procedures that will be increasingly scrutinized by health insurance companies, regulators, courts, and consumers.

Also, technicians will be needed to enter patient information into computer databases to comply with Federal legislation mandating the use of electronic patient records.
