Exam Eligibility Requirements

New Eligibility Requirements as of 2011:
As of the May/June testing window, the HR Certification Institute requires HR professionals sitting for the PHR/SPHR exams to have a combination of demonstrated work experience and education. 

PHR EXAM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS starting 2011

  • Minimum of 1 year of demonstrated professional (exempt-level) HR experience with a master’s degree or higher.
  • At least 51% of your daily work activities are
  • Minimum of 4 years of demonstrated professional (exempt-level) HR experience with less than a bachelor’s degree.

SPHR EXAM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS starting 2011

  • Minimum of 4 years of demonstrated professional (exempt-level) HR experience with a master’s degree or higher.
  • Minimum of 5 years of demonstrated professional (exempt-level) HR experience with a bachelor’s degree.
  • Minimum of 7 years of demonstrated professional (exempt-level) HR experience with less than a bachelor’s degree.

The SHRM® Learning System Course (PHR/SPHR Exam Preparation)

The SHRM® Learning System Course is designed to provide you with an overview of key areas in human resource management. Materials include six modules that correspond to the six functional areas, responsibilities, and associated knowledge as defined by the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI). The program is offered in cooperation with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) as study material for the Professional in Human Resources (PHR) and Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification examinations administered by HRCI.

Besides being a powerful tool to assist you in preparing for the PHR or SPHR certification exams, the SHRM® Learning System Course also provides professional development for you and your HR Department. The course provides a solid foundation for managing the HR challenges you face in today's demanding work environment; it supplies a current reference of HR practices, broadens the perspective of functional specialists, and strengthens individual competencies and productivity.

Important information about the 2012 PHR®/SPHR® Exams

The 2012 PHR® and SPHR® exams will change effective with the May/June 2012 test window.  Please be sure to note the following and communicate this information to your students, SHRM Instructors and staff.

  • The exams now consist of a total of 175 questions (previously 225):

- 150 scored questions, plus
- 25 pretest questions randomly distributed throughout the exam.

  • Three hours are allotted for the exam (previously four hours).
  • Questions on both exams reflect the most recently published PHR®/SPHR® body of knowledge, and the percentages of questions in each functional area reflect the percentages as noted in the body of knowledge.
  • The exams continue to be multiple choice and consist of four possible answers, only one of which is the correct or “best possible answer.” The answer to each question can be derived independently of the answer to any other question.

Please note that to earn either the PHR or SPHR designation; candidates must have at least two (2) years of exempt-level experience in the HR field. Terms of Withdrawal

  • Withdrawal must be made through written notice to SVSU - Office of Continuing Ed & Professional Development
  • The date of withdrawal is the date of receipt.
  • Failure to attend class is not considered formal withdrawal from a course for refund consideration.

Class Withdrawal and Refund Rates

  • Written notice received no less than 14 days prior to first class for refund of all fees collected less a $50 processing fee.
  • No refund will be granted after 13 days prior to the first class meeting.
  • If SVSU cancels the program, a full refund will be given. SVSU - Office of Continuing Ed & Professional Development reserves the right to substitute instructors, change the day a program meets, or cancel programs due to insufficient enrollment or unforeseen events.
