THE OBJECTIVES of the CFP® SVSU CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER - Certification Education Program are:


1. GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF FINANCIAL PLANNING (OCE – FP 300)

This is an introduction to the principles of personal financial planning. Participants receive an extensive introduction to: time value of money concepts and applications, the regulatory requirements for the CFP@ certification, Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc., the economic environment, and the financial planning process. Each enrollee will prepare a personal financial statement and analyze it for financial strengths and weaknesses. This course is a prerequisite to all other courses.

PREREQUISITES: This is the first of a series of six courses that must be taken to complete program preparation for exam.

2. INSURANCE PLANNING (OCE – FP 301)

The basic framework for the indentifying personal risk exposures and managing them through insurance, avoidance, or self-insurance will be introduced in this class. Major topics include risk identification and evaluation, risk management techniques, legal principles, life insurance, and the insurance industry. Also, other types of personal insurance, such as health, auto, disability, and liability will be covered, as well as the Social Security program.

3. INVESTMENT PLANNING (OCE – FP 302)

Participants will receive an understanding of the types and characteristics of investment alternatives that is critical to the success of financial planning. Major topics include: types of investment vehicles and their characteristics, government regulation of securities and financial markets, the historical record of risk and returns, security valuation, investing strategies, asset allocation strategies, the efficient market hypothesis, matching investments with clients' needs, and the impact of tax policy on investment choices.

4. INCOME TAX PLANNING (OCE – FP 303)

Students are introduced to many of the income tax problems that arise in financial planning and addresses alternative courses of action to maximize clients' after-tax wealth. Major topics include: the U.S. income tax system, individual income tax determination and the impact on investment and financial planning decisions, taxes on investment income and capital gains losses, the cost basis of investment, and tax planning for retirement and death.

5. EMPLOYEE BENEFITS & RETIREMENT PLANNING (OCE – FP 304)

Financial planning process, client interactions, time value of money applications, personal financial statements, cash flow and debt management, asset acquisition, education planning, overview of risk management investment planning and retirement planning, special circumstances, plan integration, ethics, and the business of financial planning.

6. ESTATE PLANNING (OCE – FP 305)

Estate Planning focuses on the efficient conservation and transfer of wealth, consistent with the client’s goals. It is a study of the legal, tax, financial and non-financial aspects of this process, covering topics such as trusts, wills, probate, advanced directives, charitable giving, wealth transfers and related taxes. The principles covered in previous courses are integrated in this course. All other CFP courses are required prior to taking this class.

PREREQUISITES: OCE-CFP 300, 301, 302, 303, and 304.

GENERAL INFORMATION FOR ONSITE WORKSHOPS

Workshop Sites

All workshops will meet in Curtiss Hall, on the campus of Saginaw Valley State University. Campus maps will be provided to those who register one week prior to the class.

Advance Preparation

Books will be available two weeks before classes begin. You have the option to pick up your books and syllabus at that time.

Registration Deadline

For most workshops, please register no later than three week prior to the class you wish to attend. Confirmation letters will be sent approximately one week prior to class.

How to Register

You may register by mail, phone or fax. If you register by phone or fax, please indicate that payment will follow via mail.

Registration Fees

Registration fees for the Fall 2007 series are $680 per course. There are six total courses in the education program.

CEUs

Continuing education units can be obtained for completing any course in the program for an additional charge of $30.

Cancellations

We reserve the right to cancel any class for which insufficient registration is indicated.

Refund Policy

For most workshops, cancellations made one week prior to the date of the class are fully refundable. Individuals who are unable to attend and do not cancel at least two weeks prior to the start of the program, will be charged the full program fee. Individual registrants may be substituted at any time. No exceptions will be made.

Inclement Weather Policy

Since all classes are held on the campus of SVSU, should the University cancel classes, our classes will also be canceled. Call the Weather Information Line at (989) 964-4477.


Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. owns the certification marks CFP®, Certified Financial Planner™ and federally registered CFP(with flame logo) ® in the U.S., which it awards to individuals who successfully complete CFP Board’s initial and ongoing certification requirements. Saginaw Valley State University does not certify individuals to use the CFP®, Certified Financial Planner™ and CFP (with flame logo) ®, certification marks. CFP certification is granted only by Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. to those persons who, in addition to completing an educational requirement such as this CFP Board-Registered Program, have met its ethics, experience and examination requirements.
