Steps to achieving CFP® certification

Benefits of being a CFP® practitioner

CFP® Certification: How to Get it and Why

Much more than an educational designation, the CFP® certification is a professional certification that helps to set apart those serious about a career in financial planning. Certification requirements include initial and ongoing education, examination, experience and ethics components. Along with the educational requirements, candidates for CFP® certification must pass the10-hour, two-day CFP® Certification Examination, verify at least three years of full-time experience in the financial planning process and agree to abide by rigorous ethical and practice standards. Once certified, individuals must meet 30 hours of continuing education every two years.

Continuing Education Credits

The State of Michigan requires all licensed agents and solicitors to earn 30 hours of state-approved education credit every two years. The SVSU Certified Financial Planner courses are registered with the Michigan Office of Financial and Insurance Services (OFIS), – Division of Insurance (formerly the Michigan Insurance Bureau). Each course will provide between 28 & 30 hours of CE credits and will be reported to Thomson Prometric , who process insurance CE credits for the state of Michigan.

We will report your hours for credit unless you sign a waiver. Note that as of February 1, 2006, the State requires all Michigan licensed agents and solicitors to earn 24 hours of State-approved education credit every two years, three of which need to be in ethics. Each of our courses provides 30 hours of continuing education credit, but they DO NOT meet the ethics requirement – the ethics hours will need to be earned elsewhere.

If you do not wish to receive CE credits, you should submit a signed “Request for Waiver of Continuing Education Credits” form with each class registration, and you can subtract $30 from the tuition for each class.

Also note that, under State of Michigan continuing education rules, you cannot receive CE credits if you miss part of any class.

The state of Michigan no longer requires a breakdown for Life/Health or Property/Casualty. The 21 credits remaining after the 3 credit ethics requirement can be in whichever line of authority you choose.
