CIS 281 COBOL (3) Introduction to a
business oriented programming language, COBOL 85,
including statements, divisions, PERFORM statement, IF statement, control
breaks, arithmetic
statements, tables with subscripts and indexes, character manipulation and sequential file
handling. Prerequisite: CS 115.
CIS 283 Advanced COBOL (3) A continuation of CIS 281; programming with single and
multi-dimensional tables; sorting and merging; string processing; sequential, indexed, and
relative files; external subroutines; COPY
verb; COBOL 97 with objects introduced. Business applications are
emphasized. Prerequisite: CIS 281.
CIS 300 Introduction to Data Communication (3) Introduction to data communication: layers,
media, software, hardware; modems and modulation; asynchronous and synchronous protocols;
network topologies and local area network; network management.
Prerequisite: CS 215 and ECON 235.
CIS 332 Introduction to System Software (3) Introduction to system software and machine
structure, assembler, loaders and linkers, macroprocessors, compilers and operating systems.
Prerequisite: CS 230.
CIS 370 File Manipulation Techniques (3) Creation, manipulation, and comparison of data files
on different types of storage devices and choice of the appropriate storage media for business
applications. Understanding of how to retrieve data from a file using multiple keys. Prerequisite:
CS 215 and CIS 283.
CIS 385 Database Management Systems (3) Database management system components and their
functions; logical and physical database design; database implementation; relational, network,
and hierarchical database models; database administration functions. Prerequisite: CIS 370.
CIS 421 Systems Analysis and Design (3) The fundamentals of business systems analysis and
design; study of present system, developing system alternatives and prototyping of the system.
Prerequisite: CS 215. Recommended prerequisites: ACCT 213, MGT 325, CIS
281 and Junior standing.
CIS 423 System Design and Implementation (3) Study of the broad concepts and implementation
of computer based information systems. A high concentration of business applications will be
implemented. Prerequisite: CIS 421 and MGT 325. Recommended prerequisites: ACCT 214,
MGT 324, CIS 385, and CIS 300.
CIS 425 Decision Support Systems (3) The analysis and design of information systems
permitting the computer to become an integral part of the managerial decision making process.
Prerequisite: CIS 423. Recommended prerequisite: MGT 324.
