So Plant the Tree: B.A.T.S. Project 2018

Art 433 - "So Plant the Tree" mural was digitally assembled as part of the 2018 B.A.T.S. Project: Business, Art, Theatre & Sociology Reinvent Urban Communities. The Project began with an Urban Needs Identification Summit, supported by the SVSU Center for Community Engagement, on February 9, 2018, which featured panelists from the fields of education, government, business and finance, health and religion.

The class also had discussions about the mural content with community organizer Cornelius Phelps of the New Ezekiel Project, Rev. Sue Hands of Zion Lutheran Church, and Saginaw documentary filmmaker Alex Mixter.

The 6’ x 9’ vinyl banner was produced by Lamar Signs, and dedicated in the narthex of Zion Lutheran Church, 1209 Hancock Street, Saginaw on April 25, 2018. The class created a painted exterior mural at the Church in 2014.

The members of the class Art 433 Community Murals are Zainab Al Mahdi, Nyesha Clark, Eric Kroczaleski, Jocelyn Lewis, Matthew Massey, Carly Peil, Anna Slavin, Breonna Smith and Kyle Will.
