Freshman Wilderness Experience - Manistee River Trail

Cost: $100
Depart: Monday, August 19 at 5:00p
Return: Wednesday, August 21 at 8:00 pm
Included: Travel, equipment, and various meals

Head out on a backpacking trip with other incoming freshmen and you’ll start your experience at SVSU with an instant community, be able to ask your leaders, other SVSU students questions about what it is like to be a student. The Freshmen Wilderness Experience is for students who want to make friends, learn about wilderness out their back door, and hit the ground running before the first day of class.

*Must be incoming 2019 Freshman 

August 19
Arrive on Campus and move into your residence hall between 8:00-3:00p (Recreation Staff will be available to assist)
Meet at Campus Recreation by 3:00p
Equipment distribution and packing
Depart Campus by 5:00p and spend the first-night front country camping at Seaton Creek Campground

August 20
Depart Seaton Creek Campground and backpack the Manistee Trail
Arrive at Backcountry campsite and rest for the night
August 21
Complete the Manistee River Trail at Red Bridge River Access
Return to campus

Food and Beverage
August 19
Dinner – Hot dogs, brats, chips (Vegetarian option available on request)
August 20
Breakfast – Pancakes, Fruit, snack bars, oatmeal
Lunch – Trail lunches (Tuna Salad, Chicken Salad)
Dinner – Mountain House Freeze Dried Dinner
August 21
Breakfast – Mountain House Freeze Dried Breakfast
Lunch – Trail Lunches (Tuna Salad, Chicken Salad)

Please bring refillable water bottles to use a total minimum 2 L. Feel free to bring any snacks or other items you wish. Backpacking is a strenuous activity. You will be burning many calories that will need to be replenished! If you have any dietary restrictions or preferences, please let us know at registration in order to make accommodations.

1-2 pair athletic pants/synthetic hiking pants
1 pair of shorts
2-synthetic/athletic shirts (cotton is not good!)
1 long sleeve for at night
1 long/warm pair of sleep pants
2 pair of thick socks
2 pair of undergarments
1 pair of durable hiking boots

Sleeping bag*
Sleeping pad*
Eating utensils – Bowl/Spork*
Flashlight/ headlamp
Water bottles total min. 2 L
Toiletry items – toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, baby wipes
Sun hat/baseball cap
Bug spray

*Available for rental from Campus Recreation. Rental equipment needed to participate on trips with Campus Recreation is provided for free.

Keep in mind that what you bring on the trip will need to fit in 35-65 L backpack. You are responsible for carrying your belongings. Ounces add up to pounds!
