Intercollegiate athletics at Saginaw Valley State University serve an
important and integral role in fulfilling the University's educational
mission. The principal goal of these programs is to teach the lessons and
values that can be learned through competitive athletics, both for the benefit
of participating students and spectators.
The athletic programs at SVSU aim to teach participants and spectators lessons
about self-reliance and teamwork, respect for one's self and one's rival,
creative problem solving, a commitment to goals, courage under pressure, the
importance of integrity in all matters, humility in success and grace in
defeat.
About 400 students each year participate in intercollegiate athletics at SVSU.
The Cardinals' athletic program has accumulated an impressive list of awards,
titles and trophies through competition in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference. The football team competes in the Midwest Intercollegiate
Football Conference. SVSU is an NCAA Division II school.

Recreation/Intramurals
There are many options for fitness and recreation at SVSU. The University's
Ryder Center offers an impressive array of health and recreational facilities,
including a fitness center, use of the indoor track and basketball courts,
outdoor tennis courts and an Olympic-sized swimming pool. Intramural sports
opportunities include flag football, co-ed softball, tennis, innertube water
basketball, co-ed volleyball, floor hockey, racquetball, walleyball, aerobics,
badminton, soccer, ping pong and other activities.
