Cardinals Compete at GLIAC
Championships
ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men’s
and women’s cross country squads competed at the GLIAC Championships
on Saturday (October 23), with the men finishing in fourth place
and the women coming home with an eleventh-place showing. Grand
Valley State won both the men’s and women’s competitions.
Ashland’s Nate Iler (25:07.2) took first in the men’s
race, while Northern Michigan’s Stephanie Howe (22:19.9) took
first on the women’s course.
On the men’s course, junior
Adam Roach (Port Huron, Mich.) led the
Cardinals with a fifth-place finish (25:44.9), while sophomore
James Gale (Westland, Mich./Livonia Churchill) and
freshman Steve Czymbor (Hemlock, Mich.) finished
in 18th place and 19th place, respectively. Gale finished in 26:19.4,
while Czymbor crossed the finish line in 26:19.7. Sophomore Len
Weddell (East Tawas, Mich./Tawas Area) took 22nd
(26:30.0), senior Pedro Ortega (Saginaw, Mich./Swan
Valley) took 25th (26:38.9), sophomore Greg Schmit
(Leslie, Mich.) took 34th (27:00.02) and junior Paul
Jozwiak (Berkley, Mich.) took 47th (27:38.3).
The Saginaw Valley State women were
led by freshman Becca Rudey (Wixom, Mich./Walled
Lake Western), who took 45th place with a time of 24:08.2.
Seniors Diane Johnston (Grand Blanc, Mich.)
and Megan Strohkirch (Gladwin, Mich.)
followed in 51st place and 53rd place, running 24:21.7 and 24:24.6
for the Cardinals. Sophomore Jenny Bellsky (Frankenmuth,
Mich.) ran a 25:00.0 for 67th place, while freshman Kelli
Kaiser (Lachine, Mich./Alpena) ran 25:29.8 for
72nd place. Freshmen Jessica Sweeney (Saginaw,
Mich./Heritage) and Jenny Phelan (Horton,
Mich./Hanover-Horton) finished in 78th place and 79th place,
respectively, to round out the Cardinal finishers. Sweeney finished
with a time of 25:54.5, while Phelan ran a 25:57.3.
The Cardinal harriers return to action
on November 6 at the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional. The
women are set for an 11:00a.m. start, while the men will begin their
race at noon.
