Men Take
First, Women Take Second at Ferris Invite
BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men’s
cross country squad came home with a first-place showing from the
Bulldog Invitational, while the women earned second-place honors.
Junior Adam Roach (Port
Huron, Mich.) took first place overall (25:37.16), while freshman
Steve Czymbor (Hemlock, Mich.) finished
in fifth place (26:02.38). Taking sixth was sophomore James
Gale (Westland, Mich./Livonia Churchill) in 26:18.47.
The Cardinals also claimed the eighth, ninth and tenth positions
as Greg Schmit (Leslie, Mich.), Len
Weddell (East Tawas, Mich./Tawas Area) and Pedro
Ortega (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley) ran together
for much of the 8-kilometer race. Schmit crossed in 26:30.59, Wedell
finished in 26:35.55 and Ortega clocked in at 26:40.09.
Freshman Becca Rudey
(Wixom, Mich./Walled Lake Western HS) led the SVSU women with
a third-place showing (19:31.32), while senior Meagan Strohkirch
(Gladwin, Mich.) took fifth in 19:47.43. Senior Diane
Johnston (Grand Blanc, Mich.) followed in sixth
place (19:50.18), while junior Jenny Bellsky (Frankenmuth,
Mich.) took 15th place in 20:42.88. The
Cardinals return to action on Saturday (October 2) when they travel
to Loyola, Illinois for the Lake Shore Invitational. Running is
set to begin at 11:15a.m.
