Cross Country Sweeps Again

NORTHWOOD, Mich. – SVSU's cross country teams have made it two wins in a row to start the season, winning both the women's and the men's events at the Northwood Invitational on Friday. Freshman Meagan Strohkirch (Gladwin) won the 6K women's event, posting a time of 21:12.70 . Her teammates, Diane Johnston (Grand Blanc) and Sarah Johnston (Grand Blanc) finished :05 behind her to finish second and right behind her was Sarah Johnston to take home third place.
On the mens' side, Northwood's Josh Helsel won the rain-shortened event in 20:30.80. The thunder and lightning threatening the area at the time forced the mens' race to be shortened to a 4 mile event. Saginaw Valley's Pedro Ortega (Saginaw/Swan Valley), Jim Wahl (St. Helen/Roscommon), and Mike Irwin (Lapeer/West) finished third, fourth, and fifth respectively.
With the Cardinals winning their own invitational last weekend, both teams move to 2-0 on the young season and will travel to Big Rapids, Mich. to compete in the Ferris State University Invitational next Friday, Sept. 14 at 6 p.m.
