Cardinals Win SVSU Invitational

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The men's and women's cross country teams each took first place in their season opener, a home invitational. On the women's side, the top four finishers were all Cardinals. Diane Johnston (Grand Blanc) won the 6K event, posting a time of 25:37.53. Her teammates Sarah Johnston (Grand Blanc) finishing at 25:48.66, Meagan Strohkirch, in at 26:08.69, and Rikki Owczarzak (Bay City/ Western), who came in at 26:08.69,all finished right behind the leader to help the Cardinals take first place honors. Also finishing for the Cardinals were Heather Kersjes (Corunna), who finished eighth, with a time of 27:12.73, and Jessica Hugo, finishing tenth at 28:45.89. For the men, four runners placed in the top ten, helping the Cardinals edge out second place Lansing Community College by six points. Scoring for the Cardinals were: Jerome Recker, second at 27:38.27, Pedro Ortega (Saginaw/ Swan Valley),fourth at 27:48.66, Mike Irwin (Lapeer/ West), finishing seventh at 28:06.45, Jim Wahl (St. Helen/ Roscommon) eighth in 28:09.01 and Tim Watkins (New Boston/ Riverview Gabriel Richard), who posted a 28:31.64 time to finish 12th. Lansing Community College's Mike Gray took home first place with a time of 27:23.66.
The four schools participating in the Invitational were: Lansing Community College, Mott Community College (Flint), Northwood University and SVSU. The Cardinals will travel to Midland next weekend to compete in the Northwood Invitational, beginning Friday, September 7at 4:30p.m.
