Cardinals End Season at GLIAC Tournament

MIDLAND, Mich.- The SVSU tennis team finished their season 0-3 at the GLIAC tournament Friday and Saturday (October 25-26). The first round saw the eighth-seeded Cardinals fall 5-0 to first-seeded Northern Michigan. The loss then pitted the Cardinals against fifth-seeded Mercyhurst in the consolation round. The Cardinals dropped a 5-2 decision to the Lakers. SVSU finished their season with a 6-3 loss to seventh-seeded Michigan Tech in the seventh place match.
     The Cardinals were led by Nikki Schwarz (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek HS), who was 2-0 on the weekend at first singles. Schwarz picked up victories over Alison Hughes of Mercyhurst (7-5, 7-5) and Laura Matzka of Michigan Tech (2-6, 6-0, 6-2). Cassie Jastrzebski (Fraser, Mich.) picked up her 10th victory of the season, downing Alison Skwarski of Michigan Tech (6-1, 6-0).
     In doubles action, the team of Brooke Kennedy (Walled Lake, Mich./Western HS) and Holly Halvatgis (Anchorage, Alaska/Robert Service HS) led the Cardinals with a 2-0 record at third doubles for the tournament. The duo earned victories over teams from Mercyhurst (8-4) and Michigan Tech (8-5).
     The Cardinals finish the season with a 5-9 overall record.
