Northwood Blanks SVSU

SAGINAW – Saginaw Valley State University suffered a 9-0 defeat to Northwood University Friday at Four Flags Racquet Club.
     The Lady Cardinals lost close matches at the bottom three singles and bottom two doubles flights to fall to 2-2 overall and 2-2 in the GLIAC. Northwood improved to 4-0 overall and in the league.
     "We had some chances but couldn't close," said Cardinal coach Jim Teal. "We had leads in a couple of matches, but couldn't put them away."
     The Cardinals won only three games in straight set losses in the top three singles flights. Junior Eva Mineva (Sofia, Bulgaria/National Sportive Academy) defeated junior Dawn Thomas (Port Huron/Northern) at No. 1 by scores of 6-1, 6-0. Junior Lisa Neugebauer (Vienna, Austria/University of Law) topped sophomore Meghan LaForrest (Bay City/Central) at No. 2, 6-0, 6-0. Junior Helena Kotaskova (Prague, Czech Republic/School of Commerce) won at No. 3 over freshman Cassie Jastrzebski (Fraser), 6-1, 6-1.
     Sophomore Jennifer Spence (Saginaw/Heritage) of SVSU won her first set over freshman Fatima Arshad (Adrian), 6-2, but dropped the next two sets 6-0, 6-4. Junior Holly Smith (Bellbrook, OH) needed three sets to beat senior Heidi Yeagly (Flushing), 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 5. Junior Erica Juhl (Mound, MN/Westonka) won a pair of close sets at No. 6, topping freshman Samantha Dodson (Frankenmuth).
     Mineva and Neugebauer took the No. 1 doubles match 8-1 over Thomas and Spence. Kotaskova/Arshad edged LaForrest/Dodson at No. 2, 8-5. Smith/Juhl nipped Yeagley and sophomore Jennifer Roy (Byron, GA,/Peach County) by an 8-6 count at No. 3.
     The Cardinals host Grand Rapids Junior College in an exhibition match Monday at 1 p.m. Northwood hosts Northern Michigan University at 3 p.m. next Thursday.
