Lady Cardinals Start Season with Victory

UNIVERSITY CENTER – Saginaw Valley State University picked up where it left off last year, winning its GLIAC and season opener with a 5-4 squeaker over Hillsdale College at the SVSU tennis courts Friday.
     "Thank God for the bottom of our order," said head coach Jim Teal.
     The Lady Cardinals posted victories at No. 3, 5 and 6 singles and No. 2 and 3 doubles to pull out the win.
     SVSU sophomore Jennifer Roy (Byron, GA,/Peach County) defeated Natalie Braden by scores of 6-2 and 7-6 (7-6) in the closest match of the day at No. 3 singles.
     Cardinal senior captain Heidi Yeagley (Flushing) took out Courtney Helberg at No. 5 singles by scores of 6-3 and 6-1. Freshman Samantha Dodson (Frankenmuth) won her collegiate debut with a 6-4, 6-0 No. 6 singles win over Cheryl Low.
     Dodson and teamed with sophomore Meghan LaForrest (Bay City/Central) for an 8-3 victory at No. 2 doubles, dumping Braden and Kim Gottlin. Roy and Yeagley also won at No. 3 doubles, defeating Claire Johnson and Helberg by a score of 8-4.
     The Cardinals are opening the season with eight straight home matches, then close the season with six straight events on the road.
