Cardinals Top NMU 5-1 in Home Finale

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women’s soccer team rebounded from its loss to Northwood with a 5-1 win over Northern Michigan on Sunday (October 24) in the Cardinals’ final home game of the season. The following five SVSU seniors played their final home game in front of 207 spectators: Christine Luther (Woodhaven, Mich.), Barb Powell (Williamston, Mich.), Krista St. Aubin (Sterling Heights, Mich./Utica), Katie Terry (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson) and Jenny Prior (Flusing, Mich.).
     SVSU’s Kelly Pruitt (Shelby Twp., Mich./Utica) opened the scoring with a header assisted by Katie Terry at 31:36. The Cardinals held the 1-0 lead for the remainder of the first half.
     Junior Ashleigh Burke (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage) opened the second half scoring when she scored on a header assisted by freshman Mara Dedomenicis (Windsor, Ontario/Holy Name) at 51:28. Jenny Prior struck next on an unassisted breakaway at 80:25, but Northern Michigan came back with a quick goal by Kerri Vander Velden that was assisted by Michelle Brown at 80:40. Prior then struck again at 87:01 on a breakaway that was assisted by freshman Beth Butterfield (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel Catholic Central). Butterfield scored the final goal of the game at 88:25 on a spectacular assist from Krista St. Aubin.
     Sophomore goalkeeper Stacy LaLond (Cheboygan, Mich.) went the distance in net, allowing only one goal and collecting four saves. Northern Michigan managed 15 total shots and five shots on goal, while the Cardinals totaled 19 shots and ten shots on goal.
     The win moves the Cardinals to 8-3 (4-2 GLIAC) on the season. The Lady Cardinals hit the road for their final two games of the season. Ashland will play host to the Cardinals on Saturday (October 30), while Findlay awaits the Cardinals on Sunday (October 31). Game times for both are yet to be determined.
