Drago Named SVSU Women's Soccer Coach

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Saginaw Valley State University Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Griz Zimmermann announced that Drago has been named head women’s soccer coach. He will assume the head coaching duties effective immediately.
He opened Drago’sSportsPlex and Drago’s Soccer Academy of Excellence located in Midland, Mich. in 2001. Prior to owning his businesses, Drago was the head coach for the Detroit Rockers from 1999-2001, and served as an assistant coach for the Rockers during the 1998-1999 campaign.
   “We are very excited to be able to find someone as qualified as Drago to take over of our soccer program,” stated Zimmermann. “He has a proven track record as a player and a coach. He is a welcome addition to the Cardinal family.”
   Drago played professional soccer between 1983 and 1999 for numerous teams including; the Detroit Rockers, Sacramento Knights, Detroit Neon, Hershey Impact, Washington Diplomats (outdoor), Atlanta Attack, Baltimore Blast, Maryland Bays (outdoor), Chicago Sting, Minnesota Strikers, and Pittsburgh Spirit. He was named a six-time all-star and set several new league records during this time. Drago also won an NPSL Championship with the Detroit Rockers in 1992. He started playing soccer professionally at the age of 16 in Yugoslavia, where he played internationally in UEFA and FIFA competitions. Drago was born in Croatia.
   “I am very thrilled about this opportunity with Saginaw Valley State,” said Drago. “There is a long road ahead, but SVSU is a great environment to succeed.”
   He will inherit a team that was 2-15-1 (0-8-1 GLIAC) as it prepares for 2003 season (Aug. 29). The Cardinals will return 2001 leading scorer Krista St.Aubin (Sterling Heights, Mich) who missed last season with an injury. 2002 leading scorer Jessica Biecker (Utica, Mich./Eisenhower HS) and goaltender Linde McCubbin (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) will return to the Cardinals as well.
