Cardinals Drop Heartbreaker in Opener

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – SVSU's women's soccer team kicked off the 2001 season in the First Annual Cardinal Kickoff Classic, losing an overtime affair with Lewis (Chicago) University 1-0 on Friday.  The game was scoreless going into the extra frame with SVSU dominating the first 90 minutes, but unable to capitalize on its chances.
"We had several opportunities, but we just couldn't convert," said SVSU coach Jim Conner. "We had several balls hit the post. I was very pleased with the effort we put forth in this game. We had several players see time that normally wouldn't."
Lewis University's Lily Alcala put home the winner just 2:07 into overtime on a breakaway to seal the deal for the Flyers. Saginaw Valley's Linde McCubbin (Saginaw/Heritage) stopped eight of nine shots while Lewis's Courtney Hutt stopped all 14 shots on net.
The Lady Cards' record falls to 0-1-0 as they face Northern Kentucky University tomorrow at 1:30 pm in game four of the tourney. In today's first contest, Northern Kentucky defeated Northwood 10-0.  Northwood will play Lewis in tomorrow's opener, set to kickoff at 11:30 a.m.
