Mercyhurst Blanks Cardinals

University Center, Mich. – The Mercyhurst Laker soccer team, behind All-American goalkeeper Meghan Frey, kept the Cardinals scoreless in a 4-0 win on Saturday. The shutout marks the eighth time this season that the Cards have been blanked.
The match was scoreless at halftime, until Mercyhurst's Jessica Hoppe slipped a header past SVSU keeper Linde McCubbin (Saginaw/Heritage) just two minutes into the second half. It was 2-0 heading into the final three minutes of play when Chelsea Fearnley and Tuesday Katsner netted goals two minutes apart to finish the scoring at 4-0.
Four different Lakers scored, with Julia Kowzan picking up a goal and adding two assists. Frey stopped all nine Cardinal shots on net.
The loss drops the Cardinals' record to 2-12 overall (0-5 GLIAC). SVSU returns to action on Sunday with a 1 p.m. kickoff versus Gannon University.
