Northern Nips Cardinals

UNIVERSITY CENTER - The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker on Saturday afternoon, losing to Northern Michigan University, 4-3.
Cardinal freshman Krista St. Aubin (Utica) opened the scoring at the 2:47 mark of the first half, unassisted. The Lady Wildcats then responded with three goals. To finish out the first half St. Aubin knocked in her second goal of the game with an assist going to senior Carrie Loveland (Grand Blanc). Early in the second half Sheri Weston (Jackson/Lumen Christi) of SVSU found the back of the net. The assist went to Loveland. The game remained tied until the 85:50 mark when Lene Stavland of NMU scored what would turn out to be the game winning goal.
Freshman goalkeeper Linde McCubbin (Saginaw/Heritage) had six saves for Saginaw Valley.
"This was a disappointing loss," said head coach Jim Conner. "We played well enough to win today but made enough mistakes to let them (Northern Michigan) in the game. We had a hard time coming back from our big win on Wednesday and just couldn't handle their pace up front."
Northern ended the game with 21 shots 12 of which were on goal. Saginaw Valley tallied 18 shots 11 on goal.
SVSU falls to 4-6-2 overall, 3-4-1 in the GLIAC. The next match is Wednesday, October 4th, when they will travel to Midland to challenge Northwood University, at 4 p.m.
