GLIAC Season Opens with Tie

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- Saginaw Valley State University and Ferris State University had a defensive battle in the GLIAC season opener for both schools as they finished with a 1-1 tie after two overtimes.
"I thought we dominated for the most part, throughout the match," said fourth-year head coach Jim Conner, whose squad has a 2-2-2 overall record and is 0-0-1 in the GLIAC. "We may have been a little flat at the start after a 10-day layoff."
SVSU got on the board first with a goal from sophomore Sheri Weston (Jackson/Lumen Christi) at the 28:56 mark. Junior Elizabeth Elliott (South Bend, IN/Clay) drew the assist.
FSU evened the contest at the 74:21mark when Christy White scored with an assist from Kim Touroo.
"We made a mistake at midfield and they capitalized," said Conner.
The Lady Bulldogs fired 10 shots in the first half, while SVSU had only two. Ferris finished with 19 shots, while the Cards had 16. Each team had 14 shots on goal.
Freshman Linde McCubbin (Saginaw/Heritage) made 12 saves for SVSU, while Alana Dombrowski had one save in the first half, before giving way to Connie Bigott, who made 10 stops in blanking the Cards the rest of the way.
Ferris is 2-1-1 overall and 0-0-1 in the league. The Cardinals play at Ashland University at 11 a.m. Saturday.
