SVSU Chops Wood
MIDLAND - Saginaw Valley State University snapped
a three-game road losing streak in convincing fashion with a 3-0
victory at local rival Northwood University Wednesday.
Freshman goalkeeper Linde McCubbin
(Saginaw/Heritage) had nine saves for her school-record fourth shutout
of the season.
Senior Courtney Nash (Mason) scored
a pair of first-half goals for SVSU and freshman Krista St. Aubin
(Utica) added one in the second half. Nash scored 5:55 into the
contest with an assist from senior Carrie Loveland (Grand Blanc).
Sophomore Sheri Weston (Jackson/Lumen Christi) assisted on Nash's
second goal at the 24:27 mark, then Weston had a helper on St. Aubin's
team-leading ninth goal of the campaign at the 74:08 mark.
"We played an outstanding match,"
said head coach Jim Conner. "For our seniors it was a particularly
pleasing win because they were able to close their career with a
win at Northwood."
"It's always nice to chop a little
wood when you get a chance," he added, referring to the Homecoming
Theme for SVSU's football game with NU on Oct. 14.
The Lady Cardinals had 17 shots, including
11 on goal, while the Timberwolves had 15 shots and nine on goal.
Tamber Stratten made eight saves for NU.
SVSU improved to 5-6-2 overall, 3-4-1
in the GLIAC. The Cards get 11 days off before hosting the University
of Findlay in their final GLIAC match of the season at 1 p.m. on
Sunday, Oct. 15.
