Bill DeLong begins his first season coaching at the collegiate level in 2004-05. He comes to SVSU with a wide range of experiences in several different settings at the high school level.
A 1964 graduate of Saginaw High School, DeLong participated in basketball, baseball and cross country for three years at the prep level.
Coach DeLong earned a bachelor’s degree in biology and physical education from Central Michigan University in 1968. While at CMU, DeLong was active in baseball and freshman basketball. Prior to his graduation, he went on to teach elementary physical education for Saginaw Public Schools from 1968-71. During this time he also served as the boys’ junior varsity basketball coach and varsity baseball coach at Carrollton High School.
From 1971 to 1987 DeLong worked strictly for Carrollton Public Schools, teaching biology, physical education, life science and health education. He continued coaching junior varsity boys’ basketball and varsity baseball, while adding the duties of assistant track coach and girls’ varsity basketball coach. During his tenure at Carrollton, DeLong coached the girls’ varsity basketball team to two Class C state championships (1981 & 1982) and earned Class C State Coach of the Year honors. In addition to the two state championships, DeLong’s teams won four district championships (1981, ’82, ’84, ’85) and three regional titles (1981, ’82, ’84). DeLong’s record as girls’ varsity basketball coach was 128-46, while he also earned more than 100 victories as the boys’ junior varsity basketball coach.
In 1987 DeLong switched over to Bay City Public Schools. He was a classroom teacher and boys’ varsity basketball coach at Bay City Central High School. He also served as assistant softball coach at Bay City Western High School from 1997 to 1999. From 1996 to 2004, DeLong handled the additional duties of facilities manager.
In addition to his coaching accomplishments, DeLong was instrumental in developing both the boys’ and girls’ basketball day camps at Carrollton High School. He also coordinated the basketball day camp at Bay City Central High School from 1987 to 1989. From 1982 to 1987 he served on the state all-star selection committee and the U.P.I. Ratings Committee. A guest lecturer at many state and local basketball camps and banquets, DeLong has served on the teaching staff at Dick Baumgartner’s Shooting Camp and at the “Yes I Can” basketball camp at Olivet College. He also helps in the individual coaching of former Michigan State University and current National Basketball Association star Jason Richardson.
Coach DeLong resides in Saginaw with his wife Deborah (Langeneker). The couple has one daughter, Kelly (27), and has been married since 1973.
