Cardinals
Stumble Against Tech, Fall 65-54
Statistics
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The SVSU women's basketball squad
dropped a tough home game to Michigan Tech on Saturday (Feb. 19)
by a score of 65-54. The Cardinals trailed 35-30 going into the
halftime break but Tech stretched their lead to 18 points twice
during the second stanza. The Cardinals attempted to chip away
but they could get only as close as 11 to finish the game.
Sophomore forward Sam Foggio
(Farmington Hills, Mich./Mercy) led SVSU with
a career-high 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting off of the bench. Sophomore
Sara Bilunes (Holt, Mich.) added 14
points on 6-of-11 shooting, dished out a team-high five assists
and tallied a game-high three steals. Freshman forward Kali
Briggs (Jackson, Mich./Vandercook Lake) contributed
13 points and seven rebounds to the Cardinal cause.
Michigan Tech was led by Catherine
Rottier's 16 points and five rebounds, while Sarah Stream added
13 points and a game-high seven assists. Amanda Sieja burned the
Cardinals early in the game and finished with 12 points on 5-of-10
shooting.
The story of the game was found
in the percentages, as MTU connected on 52.9% of their field goal
attempts and held the Cardinals to just 39.3% shooting. SVSU managed
to control the rebounding battle, holding a 35-27 advantage, but
that was not enough to make up for the gap in shooting percentage.
The Cardinals knocked down four
three-point field goals to tie the SVSU single-season record fo
179 set during the 1997-98 season. The Cardinals have two remaining
games to break the record.
SVSU falls to 7-17 (3-13 GLIAC)
with the loss, while Tech improves to 19-6 (13-3 GLIAC). The Cardinals
return to action on Monday (Feb. 21) when they travel to Northwood
for a 5:30p.m. conference clash.
