HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University
women's basketball team ran into a buzz saw against Michigan Tech
on Thursday (Jan. 27) evening as the Cardinals dropped a 62-40
decision to the Huskies. SVSU held their only lead at 8-7 with
15:38 remaining in the first half, only to see MTU make a 31-12
run to close out the first half.
Sophomore guard Lisa Collison
(Saginaw, Mich./Heritage) was the only Cardinal
player to reach double figures in the scoring column as she pumped
in 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field on 3-of-6 shooting
from three-point range. Collison played all 40 minutes for SVSU.
Freshman forward Kali Briggs (Jackson, Mich./Vandercook
Lake) returned from injury with seven points and a game-high
eight rebounds in 28 minutes of action.
Jenna Bartels led Tech with a game-high
17 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Bartels connected on
6-of-8 field goal attempts. Amanda Sieja was the only other player
to hit double digits, scoring 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting.
Tech shot 52.2% from the field as
a team, while holding SVSU to just a 36.2% showing. The Huskies
also held a 28-26 advantage in rebounds.
With the loss, SVSU drops to 5-12
(2-8 GLIAC) on the season, while MTU moves to 16-3 (10-0 GLIAC).
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday (Jan. 29) at Northern
Michigan. Game time is set for 1:00p.m.
