Soar Past T'Wolves, 66-51

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley
State University women's basketball team came out inspired and
earned a 66-51 win over the visiting Northwood Timberwolves on
Wednesday (Feb. 2). The Cardinals trailed for the first eight
minutes of the game before going on a 30-12 run to close out the
first half, taking a 40-23 lead into the locker room. The Timberwolves
outscored SVSU 28-26 in the second half but it wasn't enough,
as the Cardinals ended with the 15-point victory.
Sophomore Sara Bilunes (Holt,
Mich.) led the way with game-highs of 17 points and four
assists, while tying a SVSU record by connecting on 10-of-10 free-throw
attempts. The feat was first accomplished by Roseanne Rutledge
during the 1991-92 season, also against Northwood.
Senior Jessica Wilson (Martin,
Tenn./Westview) followed up with 16 points, a game-high four
assists and a game-high seven rebounds. Freshman Kara
Kinzer (Shelby Twp., Mich/Utica Eisenhower)
dropped in a career-high 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting. She also
tied her career high with four three-point field goals, coming
in five attempts, and set a career high with four steals. Senior
Krista St. Aubin (Sterling Heights, Mich./Utica)
added eight points and a career-high five steals to aid the Cardinal
cause.
Anna Trim and Maureen Elliott each
scored 13 points to lead Northwood. Payge Salquist pulled down
a game-high seven rebounds, while Elliott added a team-high three
assist for the Timberwolves.
For the game, the Cardinals held
NU to just 31.5% shooting from the field and 27.3% from three-point
range. The Cardinals managed to shoot 37.7% from the field and
50.0% from three-point land, while also connecting on 19-of-23
free-throw attempts. Northwood hit just 14-of-21 attempts from
the charity stripe. Northwood held a 44-34 edge in rebounds but
turned the ball over 25 times, compared to just 19 for the Cardinals.
The win ends the Cardinals' three-game
losing streak and improves their record to 6-12 (3-8 GLIAC). Northwood
falls to 7-13 (3-8 GLIAC). SVSU returns to the court on Saturday
(Feb. 5) for a non-conference clash against Marygrove at the James
E. O'Neill, Jr. Arena. Game time is set for 1:00p.m.
