UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley
State University women's basketball team jumped out to an early
lead and never looked back, earning a 90-29 win over the visiting
Marygrove Mustangs on Saturday (Feb. 5). The Mustangs held their
only lead at 1-0 early in the game only to see the Cardinals take
control and go into the halftime break with a 45-17 lead. SVSU
went on to outscore Marygrove 43-14 in the second half to claim
the victory.
Freshman Kara Kinzer (Shelby
Twp., Mich./Utica Eisenhower) posted a career-high and SVSU
season-high 30 points, connecting on 12-of-24 field goal attempts
and 5-of-11 three-point attempts. Kinzer also dished out a career-high
five assists. Kinzer's 30 points was the highest output from an
SVSU player since Jennifer Brogger scored 30 in an 82-58 win over
Northern Michigan (1/31/04) last season.
Sophomore Sara Bilunes (Holt,
Mich.) scored a career-high 24 points and dished out a career-high
and game-high nine assists for the victors. Bilunes knocked down
9-of-16 field goal attempts and 5-of-10 from three-point range.
Sophomore Samantha Foggio
(Farmington Hills, Mich./Mercy) posted a career-high
12 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. Freshman Domonique
Desira (Northville, Mich.) tied Foggio for game-high
honors in rebounds with 11 boards. Senior Jessica Wilson
(Martin, Tenn./Westview) pitched in with 10
points and tied a career-high with six assists, while Stephanie
Hass (Harbor Springs, Mich./Harbor Light Christian)
added 10 points and five rebounds. Senior Krista St. Aubin
(Sterling Heights, Mich./Utica) dished out a
career-high six assists for the Cardinals.
Marygrove was led by Jessica TaeKens'
10 points, while Brittany Smith followed up with eight points
and seven rebounds. Tiffany Burt added seven points and nine rebounds
for the Mustangs.
The Cardinals held Marygrove to
just 21.4% shooting from the field, while not allowing a single
three-point field goal. On the offensive end, SVSU shot 43.2%,
including 13-of-32 (40.6%) from three-point range. SVSU also controlled
the boards, pulling down 51 rebounds and holding the Mustangs
to just 39. The Cardinals also played carefully, turning the ball
over a season-low six times, while forcing 27 Marygrove turnovers.
SVSU improves to 7-12, while Marygrove
falls to 5-15 on the season. The Cardinals travel to Grand Valley
State on Thursday (Feb. 10) for a 6:00p.m. clash with the Lakers.
