Statistics

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team dropped a 74-37 decision to the visiting Grand Valley State Lakers on Thursday (Dec. 9). The Cardinals trailed 40-17 at the halftime break and could not get any closer than 20 points after the break.
SVSU was led in defeat by sophomore Sara Bilunes (Holt, Mich.), who posted 17 points on 7-of-18 shooting from the field and 3-of-9 from three-point range. Sophomore Lisa Collison (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage) was the only other Cardinal to crack double digits as she pitched in with 10 points and two steals. Freshman Kali Briggs (Jackson, Mich./Vandercook Lake) pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds. The double-digit effort was Briggs' sixth of the season.
Janine Guastella hit 8-of-10 total shots and 4-of-5 three-point attempts for a game-high 21 points for the Lakers. She also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. The only other GVSU player to hit for double-figures was Crystal Zick, who scored 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor.
GVSU held statistical advantages in virtually every category. The telling statistic, however, was the .545 to .241 advantage in field goal percentage. The Lakers connected on 30-of-55 field goal attempts, while the Cardinals could manage only a 14-of-58 effort. The Lakers also had 20 assists to the Cardinals' seven.
The Cardinals fall to 3-5 (1-2 GLIAC) on the young season, while GVSU improves its record to 5-2 (2-0 GLIAC). SVSU returns to the court on Saturday (Dec. 11) for a 1:00p.m. clash with the visiting Bulldogs of Ferris State.
