BRIGGS NETS CAREER-HIGH
24 IN 70-53 LOSS AT FERRIS STATE
BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State women’s
basketball squad dropped their 13th consecutive meeting to the Bulldogs,
70-53, on Saturday afternoon from Jim Wink Arena. Freshman forward
Kali Briggs (Jackson, Mich./Vandercook Lake)
was a bright spot for the Cardinals as she dropped in a career-high
24 points on 10-of-12 shooting. She also led the squad with eight
boards and grabbed four steals.
The Cardinals come out stumbling in the game’s first four
minutes and trailed 9-0 going 0-of-6 from the field with three turnovers.
The Bulldogs continued the pace heading into the first media timeout
leading 17-0. FSU shot 6-of-8 and 4-of-5 from the arc in the first
five minutes. The Cardinals first points came at 13:16 with a runner
in the lane by Sara Bilunes. SVSU struggled to find their shooting
touch for the first 10 minutes and trailed 22-5 at the 9:20 mark
going 2-of-18 (.111) from the field. Briggs got the Cardinals a
little momentum hitting her first three shots and closing the deficit
to 25-13 with under five to go in the half. The Bulldogs closed
out the half with a 34-18 lead on 39.4 percent (13-of-33) while
SVSU shot 25.8 percent (8-of-31).
FSU scored the first seven points to start the second half and built
a 41-18 lead in the first four minutes. SVSU would cut the lead
to 17 points at 11:02 making it 49-32 and again making it 61-44
at 5:30, but it was the closest they could get in the second half.
Sophomore guard Sara Bilunes (Holt, Mich.)
shot 5-of-11 and scored 12 points while dishing out five assists.
SVSU forced 28 turnovers, but FSU balanced things out by shooting
63.6 percent (14-of-22) in the second half. FSU shot 49.1 percent
for the game compared to SVSU’s 33.8 percent. SVSU had a season-high
19 steals with Krista St. Aubin (Shelby Twp.,
Mich./Utica) grabbing a career-high six steals.
