Cardinals
Open Season with 47-35 Loss to Eckerd
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's
basketball team opened its season with a 47-35 loss to Eckerd
College at the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament on Friday (Nov. 19). The
Cardinals will play Puerto Rico Bayamon on Saturday (Nov. 20)
in the second game of the tournament. Tip-off is set
for 1:00p.m.
Sophomore point guard Sara
Bilunes (Holt, Mich.) led the Cardinals with
14 points on 5-of-16 shooting from the floor, 2-of-2 shooting
from the free throw line and 2-of-5 shooting from 3-point range. Bilunes
played all 40 minutes for SVSU. Freshman Kali Briggs (Jackson,
Mich./Vandercook Lake) had an impressive collegiate debut
as she pulled down 18 total rebounds (6 offensive, 12 defensive)
and scored four points. Freshman Stephanie Sills (Clinton
Twp., Mich./ Chippewa Valley) chipped in with six points
in her first game as a Cardinal, as well.
Qunisha Rush led Eckerd with twelve
points, while Anna Gerandt added ten points. Chimene Gordon pulled
down ten rebounds.
SVSU connected on just 12-of-59
(20.3%) field goal attempts, while Eckerd managed to shoot 19-of-47
(40.4%) from the field. Eckerd held advantages in rebounds (44-37),
assists (13-8) and blocks (4-0). The Cardinals managed six steals,
while Eckerd tallied two steals.
The loss drops the Cardinals' record
to 0-1 on the young season, while Eckerd improves to 3-0.
