Statistics
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State
University women's basketball team dropped a 91-50 decision to
the visiting Ashland Eagles on Thursday (Jan. 13) at the O'Neill
Arena. The Cardinals trailed 41-19 at halftime and weren't able
to pull any closer to 14 as they played shorthanded, using only
eight players due to injuries.
Ashland jumped to an early double-digit
lead (13-2) just seven minutes into the game and never looked
back. The lead stretched to 25 points with 5:53 remaining in the
opening stanza before the Cardinals closed to 22 at the half.
SVSU chipped away at the lead and
managed to get within 14 points at the 14:17 mark but ran out
of gas shortly thereafter. Ashland continued its tough defense
and high percentage shooting to finish with a 41-point victory.
Senior Jessica Wilson (Martin,
Tenn./Westview) was the only Cardinal to crack double-figures
in scoring with 19 points, including 6-of-12 shooting from three-point
range. Sophomore Sara Bilunes (Holt, Mich.)
followed up with nine points, while freshman Kara Kinzer
(Shelby Twp., Mich./Utica Eisenhower) chipped
in with eight points off of the bench. Freshman Domonique
Desira (Northville, Mich.) and sophomore Samantha
Foggio (Farmington Hills, Mich./Mercy) each
pulled down a team-high five rebounds for SVSU.
Ashland had five players score in
double figures as each of their 10 active players cracked the
scoring column. DeAndria Bethune led the way with 16 points, while
Catherine Portyrata put up 14 points. Angie Heintz and Beth Everman
each grabbed a game-high eight rebounds, while Heintz dished out
a game-high eight assists.
The loss drops the Cardinals to
4-9 (1-6 GLIAC) on the season, while Ashland improves to 10-6
(4-4). SVSU returns to the O'Neill Arena court for a 1:00p.m.
clash with the Oilers of Findlay on Saturday (Jan. 14).
