Lady Cardinals
Fall to Hillsdale, 78-75
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University
women’s basketball team dropped a 78-75 decision to the
visiting Hillsdale Chargers on Saturday (December 6). The loss
was the Cardinals’ first of the season after beginning the
season with a six-game winning streak.
SVSU led 43-34 going into the halftime
break, but Hillsdale staged a furious comeback after the Cardinals
pushed their lead to 52-39 at 17:35 of the second half. The Chargers
took their first lead (61-60) with 8:29 remaining and did not
relinquish the lead the rest of the way.
The Cardinals were led by senior
Jennifer Brogger (Harbor Springs, Mich.),
who posted a game-high 21 points before fouling out with just
under four minutes remaining. Junior Jen Hagstrom
(Cadillac, Mich.) tacked on 13 points and seven rebounds,
while sophomore Valerie Smith (Owosso, Mich.)
recorded a double-double with eleven points and a game-high ten
rebounds.
The Chargers placed four players
in double figures in the scoring column, with Jenn Carlson leading
the way with 21 points. Nikki Wustman recorded 13 points, Jodie
Haines scored twelve and Jen Rolling rounded out the double-digit
contingent with ten points.
The loss drops the Cardinals to
6-1 (1-1 GLIAC) on the season, while Hillsdale moves to 5-3 (2-0
GLIAC). SVSU returns to the court on Saturday (December 13) when
they host Ferris State for a 1:00p.m. contest.
