Brogger's game-high 25
points leads SVSU to an 80-75 overtime win over Spring Arbor in
day one at the Farm Bureau Classic
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Cardinals got strong leadership
from senior Jennifer Brogger (Harbor Springs,
Mich.) and a game-high 25 points to boot in an 80-75 overtime
win over Spring Arbor. The Cardinals improve to 3-0 for the second
straight year and will face Cornerstone University in a 6:00 pm
tipoff on Saturday in day two of the Farm Bureau Classic.
The first half saw nine ties as Brogger's
eight points led the Cards with both teams going into the locker
room tied at 30-30. The Cards opened the second half by scoring
eight straight points after SAU took a 31-30 lead. SVSU increased
their lead to 10 points with 12:09 left in the half on a Jessica
Wilson (Martin, Tenn./Westview) steal and Lisa
Collison (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage) lay-up making it 51-41.
The Cougars made up that deficit in two minutes and the game was
knotted at 53-53 with 8:30 left in regulation. Both teams traded
baskets in the final minutes as Brogger made a jumper with 26
seconds making it 69-67 and SAU's Shanna Grubaugh hit a pair of
free throws with 13 seconds left to send the game into the extra
session.
Spring Arbor's last lead came at the 1:43
mark in OT on a Shanna DuBose jumper making it 75-74. The Cards
would score the game's next six points highlighted by a Brogger
jumper and two free throws with eight seconds remaining to ice
it. Sophomore Valerie Smith (Owosso, Mich.) tossed
in 13 points and blocked three shots. Junior Jennifer
Hagstrom (Cadillac, Mich.) added 11 points and eight
boards. Collison hit double digits for the first time in her career
with 10 points. SVSU shot 41.7 percent for the game while Spring
Arbor shot 40.5 percent from the floor. The Cards also added 25
points off Cougar turnovers.
