A DOUBLE-DOUBLE IN A 95-64 LOSS AT LAKE SUPERIOR STATE
SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Cardinals ran into a streaking
Lake Superior State squad on Thursday night at the Bud Cooper
Gymnasium and fell 95-64 to the host Lakers. Lake Superior State
won their seventh straight GLIAC game after an opening loss to
Hillsdale. Saginaw Valley State dropped its third straight and
falls to 12-6 overall and slips below .500 in the GLIAC at 4-5.
The Cardinals never held a lead in the contest as LSSU opened
the game on a 10-0 run and the Cards never recovered. The Lakers
improved to 5-0 at home on the season and 14-2 overall, 7-1 in
the conference. After the initial run to begin the game, LSSU
went on an 8-0 run to increase their lead to 28-10 with 8:01 to
go in the first half. The Cardinals went scoreless over a 4:16
period from 12:17 to 8:01. The Lakers led 46-23 at halftime and
led by as many as 33 points in the second half at 66-33 with 14:19
left.
Junior Jennifer Hagstrom
(Cadillac, Mich.) notched her third double-double of
the season with 22 points and 11 rebounds. In addition she totaled
12-of-16 from the free throw line and three blocks. The Cardinals
were hurt by 29 turnovers which LSSU turned into 27 points. SVSU
was 25-of-36 at the line (69.4 percent) and shot 83.3 percent
at the line in the second half (20-of-24). Allyson Conaway led
the Lakers with 26 points (11-of-15 FG's) and eight boards in
24 minutes.
SVSU returns to action on Monday, January 26
against Grand Valley State at the James E. O'Neill Jr. Arena.
