CARDS IMPROVE
TO 5-5 IN THE GLIAC WITH A 87-78 WIN OVER GRAND VALLEY STATE
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – A pair of Jennifer's staked
Saginaw Valley State to a key GLIAC win on Monday. Senior guard
Jennifer Brogger (Harbor Springs, Mich.)
and junior forward Jennifer Hagstrom (Cadillac,
Mich.) each poured in season-highs in points in a 87-78 win
over the visiting Lakers to improve to 5-5 in league play and
13-6 overall. Brogger scored 29 points on 10-of-15 from the field
and 6-of-6 from the line before leaving late in the second half.
Hagstrom scored not only a season-high but a career-high 24 points
on 9-of-15 from the floor. She also was 6-of-7 at the foul line
and grabbed six boards in 35 minutes.
The Cardinals and Lakers played the game
at a frenzied pace for 40 minutes as both squads shot above their
season averages. SVSU shot a season-best 60.0 percent from the
floor and were 6-of-10 from the arc. Brogger hit 3-of-4 attempts
from long range. The Cards were also 21-of-25 from the line good
for 84.0 percent.
Grand Valley State led by as many as
six points in the first half, 28-22, with 9:56 to go in the opening
stanza. The Cardinals would overtake GVSU, 45-44, with 1:37 remaining
in the first half on a pair of Jessica Wilson
(Martin, Tenn./Westview) free throws. SVSU led 49-46
at intermission and shot a blistering 65.4 percent overall (17-of-26).
SVSU held a lead until 9:43 to go in the
game when Julia Braseth hit the first of two free throws to give
the Lakers a 65-64 advantage. The Cardinals used a key 12-4 run
over the next four minutes to give them a 76-69 cushion with 5:01
to play on a Lisa Collison (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage)
triple from the right corner. Hagstrom scored 14 of her 24 points
in the second half. SVSU entertains Michigan Tech on Thursday,
January 29 for a 5:30 pm tip.
