The one-two punch of
Brogger and Smith lead SVSU to a 72-59 win over Cornerstone at
the Farm Bureau Classic
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Senior guard Jennifer Brogger (Harbor
Springs, Mich.) scored a game-high 25 points for the second straight
night and sophomore Valerie Smith (Owosso, Mich.) pulled down
a season-high 19 rebounds in a 72-59 win against Cornerstone on
Saturday. The first half was a close affair with Saginaw Valley
pulling ahead late in the half. The game was tied 27-27 with 5:41
to go when SVSU went on a 14-2 run to close out the half with
a 41-29 lead. Brogger's 18 first-half points paced the Cardinals.
The Cardinals increased their lead to
57-40 in the second half at the 13:00 minute mark on a Jennifer
Hagstrom lay-in. SVSU lead by as many as 21 points at 70-49 with
5:56 to play on a Smith jumper. Hagstrom was the other Cardinal
in double figures with 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting. SVSU outrebounded
Cornerstone, 53-42, including a 20-12 offensive rebound advantage.
Smith added nine points and four assists in 29 minutes. SVSU also
outscored the Golden Eagles bench 35-19.
