93-78
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw
Valley State women's basketball team began GLIAC play for the
2002-03 season with a 93-78 loss to Wayne State on Saturday (November
30).
SVSU took an 18-13 lead early in the game
on a jumper from the Cardinals' Jessica Wilson (Martin,
Tenn./Westview HS), who finished with twelve points and six
assists. Wayne State later tied the game at 21-21 on a lay-up
by Keneisha Moss, who recorded a game-high 29 points and 12 rebounds.
Wayne State went on to take a 43-31 advantage into the break,
never looking back the rest of the game.
"We just didn't get the stops we
needed to get, especially when we were within two points,"
said head coach Kim Chandler. "You have to be able to defend
and control the boards to be successful in the GLIAC," stated
Chandler.
The Cardinals defense couldn't prevent
six second half triples as the Warriors went on to
tally a season-high 93 points.
Senior Melissa Giancola (Eastlake,
Ohio) topped the Cardinals with 18 points and eight rebounds,
while sophomore Jennifer Hagstrom (Cadillac, Mich.)
added a season-high 16 points, eleven boards, and four blocks
for the home squad. Senior Erin Johnson (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage
HS) and sophomore Nicole Pfenninger (Bay City, Mich./Western
HS) poured in twelve and eleven points respectively for SVSU.
For the match, WSU held a 42.7% to 40.6%
advantage in shooting, and a 30.4% to 22.2% edge in 3-point shooting.
SVSU did outrebound WSU 47-41 and held a 5-3 edge in blocks.
SVSU's record slips to 1-2 (0-1 GLIAC),
while WSU improves to 1-3 (1-0 GLIAC) on the season.
SVSU will swing back into action on Monday
night (December 2), when the Cardinals entertain Hillsdale College
at 5:30p.m.
