Cardinals Fall to Missouri-St.
Louis
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State women's basketball
team fell to the University of Missouri-St. Louis 70-56 Saturday
(November 23) in the championship game of the inaugural Farm Bureau
Insurance Classic.
The Cardinals jumped out to a lead
of 18-14 midway through the first half. UMSL countered with a
27-9 run to close out the half holding a 41-27 lead. Both teams
put up identical 29-point outputs in the second half with the
Cardinals pulling no closer than 13 points after halftime. SVSU
out shot UMSL 37.7% to 36.4% and also held a 45-41 rebound margin.
However, SVSU could not overcome 26 turnovers, compared to only
seven for UMSL.
SVSU had three players score in
double figures, with freshman Elicia Kinner (Pellston,
Mich.) leading the way with 12 points. Senior Erin Johnson
(Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) added 10 points and sophomore
Jennifer Hagstrom (Cadillac, Mich.) added another
10 points to go with a game-high 12 rebounds. Other Cardinals
with notable performances were senior Angie Stewart (Perry,
Mich.) and junior Chrissy Johnstone (Chesaning,
Mich.), each of whom added seven rebounds to the Cardinal
cause. Johnson and Hagstrom were both named to the all-tournament
team following the game.
UMSL was led by the tournament's
Most Impressive Player, Christy Lane, who dropped in a game-high
28 points on 11-22 shooting from the field and 6-11 shooting from
three-point range. Jessica Woods recorded a team-high 11 rebounds
to go with nine points on the night. Joining Lane on the all-tournament
team for UMSL was Sophia Ruffin. Ruffin averaged 14 points over
the two days of competition, while Lane averaged 18 points and
seven rebounds.
In the first game of the evening,
Finlandia University topped Concordia University 76-61. Finlandia's
Beth Koski, who was named to the all-tournament team, led the
Lions with a game-high 19 points. Concordia's Carey Musko recorded
a team-high 14 points and was also named to the all-tournament
team.
SVSU ends their first weekend of
competition with a 1-1 record and returns to action on Saturday
(November 30) against Wayne State at 1:00p.m. in O'Neill Arena.
UMSL ends the weekend with a record of 2-0. Finlandia and Concordia
leave with records of 5-1 and 1-4, respectively.
