Cardinals Add Five Student-Athletes
for 2003-04
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Saginaw
Valley State University head basketball coach Kim Chandler announced
the commitment of five student-athletes to play basketball for
the Cardinals in 2003-04. Four individuals have signed National
Letters of Intent, while one student will join the program immediately.

Lisa Collision - Collison
earned league all-academic team and all conference honorable mention
as in her sophomore year. As a junior she led her team to a state
finals with a
23-4 record. That season she was a second team all-conference,
a league all-academic team selection, Saginaw News first team
All-Area, and a BCAM second team all-state selection.
During her senior season, Collison was named
to the Saginaw News Dream Team and led the Heritage High School
Hawks to the state Championship in 2003 and was named MVP of the
tournament with a 23 point performance. She also played four years
of soccer at Heritage, and was a member of the 2002 state championship
team. She carries a 4.0 gpa and is also a member of the Heritage
high school S.A.D.D. organization.
Kamaria Douglas –
Douglas played the point guard position for Lansing Everett where
she participated in the state tournament three out of her four
years and has been part of two back-to-back state championships
during her prep career. Throughout her career, she has helped
her team compile a 102-7 record. She has also been solid performer
for her AAU team, Michigan Belles, and has been an AAU state champion
throughout her junior and senior campaign.
She has also been a standout in Track, anchoring
the state qualifying 4 x 100 and
4 x 200 relay teams. Douglas has earned 12 varsity letters as
a multi-sport athlete in basketball, track, and cheerleading.
She has been a four -year member of the Honor Roll and has served
for two years as class president. She plans to major in accounting
at SVSU.
Samantha Foggio –
Foggio comes to SVSU from Mercy High School in Farmington, Mich.,
where she was a four-year letterwinner and received the Most Valuable
Player award in 2001. She is also a member of the AAU Team, Michigan
Monarchs and played a valuable role for her team in winning the
NAYBS nationals.
Foggio is also a letterwinner in track and has
served on the student council and the human relations council
at Mercy. She plans to major in Elementary Education at SVSU.
Valerie Smith –
A transfer to SVSU after competing at Northwood University as
a freshman in 2002-03. Smith joins the Cardinals following an
outstanding freshman campaign. The 6-2 forward averaged 9.3 ppg
and pulled down 5.7 rebounds per game. Smith scored in double
figures nine times throughout her freshman season with the Timberwolves
and posted a career-high 26 points at Mercyhurst (Jan. 9). She
scored 20 or more points five times last season. Her 23 rebounds
against the Lakers is an NU school record.
As a prep at Owosso High she was named first
team all-mid Michigan “A” conference as a junior and
senior. She was named to the Argus Press All-Area Team as a junior
and senior, and earned academic all-state honors both years. She
plans to pursue a nursing degree at SVSU.
Rachel Turney - The 6’0
guard from Lansing Everett will team up with her high school teammate
Kamaria Douglas at SVSU. Turney has also been a part of back-to-back
state championships and enjoyed an outstanding career of 102 wins
and just seven losses. Turney was twice named all-conference and
all-state honorable mention, in
Class A.
Turney has also been a two-year letterwinner
in volleyball and is a standout in softball where she has been
named all-state Class A. As a pitcher, she holds the school record
for strikeouts in a game (18), and has the school record for wins,
hits, and ERA. She was named team MVP during her sophomore and
junior seasons.
Turney’s accomplishments also extend beyond
athletics. She will graduate with a 4.0gpa and will be honored
as the class Valedictorian. She is a member of the National Honor
Society and has been recognized for the past three years as an
NFCA
All-American Scholar-Athlete. Turney will major in pre-medicine
and will be the recipient of the SVSU Presidential Scholarship.
