SVSU Falls To Northern
Michigan, 66-57
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Emily Samuelson
scored 21 points and Jessica Nohl had 15 as Northern Michigan
beat SVSU, 66-57, Saturday afternoon (Jan. 18) in the James E.
O’Neill Arena.
The loss was the Cardinals’ sixth
straight and drops their overall record to 4-12 (0-8 GLIAC) on
the season, while the visiting Wildcats improved to 8-6 (5-3 GLIAC).
The game stayed close for most of the
first half as both teams sank 13 shots from the floor. The Cardinals
were able to cut the Wildcat lead to three just before the break
(31-28), however Northern built a twelve point advantage (47-35)
in the second stanza. The cats would fend of several Cardinal
runs, holding on for the nine-point victory.
“I’m proud of the effort our
players gave and I’m proud of their intensity to compete,”
stated head coach Kim Chandler. “We give credit to Northern
Michigan, they’re a very talented team."
Off the bench, freshman Elicia
Kinner (Pellston, Mich.) recorded a career-high
15 points on 6-of-11 shooting and 2-of-2 from long range.
“Elicia has really done some nice
things offensively for us all year long and we think she will
be a very solid player for our future,” said Chandler.
Sophomore
Nicole Pfenninger (Bay City, Mich./Western
HS) finished with 14 points and seven rebounds.
“Nicole had an outstanding game
for us”, stated Chandler.
Sophomore Jennifer Hagstrom (Cadillac,
Mich.) posted eight points and seven boards, while junior
Gretchen Klein (Colon, Mich.) added
six points and nine rebounds.
SVSU committed only 13 turnovers, while
forcing 22 from the cats, but the Cardinals were out rebounded
51-39 after coming into the game as the top rebounding team in
the conference. NMU also was aided by a 14-7 advantage (14-20,
7-18) at the foul line.
The Cardinals return to the hardwood Thursday
evening (Jan. 23) at 5:30 p.m. when they host Ferris State in
the James E. O’Neill Arena.
