SVSU-NU Basketball Media Day Comments from
SVSU Head Coach Kim Chandler

· Opening statement…"Arriving at Saginaw Valley State last year and having a chance to be a part of a great conference, you quickly realize the great potential for a rivalry with Northwood. It's only appropriate that we're here today to talk about both of our programs and where our futures might be heading this season."

· On the newcomers…"We are looking forward to this season. We bring in 14 new faces to our program. Last year my assistant and I logged well over 10,000 miles in our cars just getting these young women into our program. We think that we've got a great group of kids that will lead us in the right direction, not only this season, but in the future as well. One of the most interesting facts is that of our 14 new players, only 4 are freshman. We feel like we've got some experience and we've got some kids coming in that will be able to step in and recognize with their maturity the chance to contribute at an early stage for us. We've improved in every position, one through five, from quickness to size to scoring ability. We're really pleased with the opportunity to blend kids with this kind of potential into our program."

· On the captains…"Erin Johnson is our leading returnee, averaging 10 points per game for us last year and is an outstanding perimeter shooter. She has really taken her game to another level over the summer and has worked very hard to increase her opportunities. We really feel she will be a great performer for us. Angie Stewart will come back at the point guard position and is another one of our tri-captains. She has also spent a lot of time this summer in terms of trying to enhance what she can add to us on the court. Melissa Giancola is our third tri-captain. She comes to us for one season and we hope to keep her healthy throughout this season so that she can contribute like we think she's able to."

· On the GLIAC predictions…"By all questions we're picked last in both polls. We are going to go out and do whatever we can to disrupt those polls so that by the end of the year they look very different from what they're slated for right now. We've got our work cut out for us, we're working hard, and we'd like to be in that conference tournament at the end of the season and let things play out from there. What I can tell you is that we'll be a team that works hard, we'll be fun to watch, we'll be competitive, and we hope to bring back that tradition that's been long lasting at Saginaw Valley State."
