Lakers Sink Cardinals
SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Danielle Pettingill recorded
16 points to lead the Lake Superior State women’s basketball
team to an 84-59 victory over Saginaw Valley State University
on Saturday (February 1). The Lakers led by only five points (34-29)
going into halftime but the Cardinals could not keep up in the
second half and were outscored 50-30 after the break.
Senior Erin Johnson
(Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) poured in a game-high 18
points on 6-of-12 shooting in a losing cause for the Cardinals.
Freshman Stephanie Hass (Harbor Springs,
Mich./Harbor Light Christian HS) also had a strong game with
nine points on 4-of-8 shooting, while sophomore Jennifer
Hagstrom (Cadillac, Mich.) pulled down a game-high
seven rebounds.
LSSU had four players score in double
figures, with Pettingill’s 16 points leading the way. Becky
Marquardt-King added 14, Brooke Henderson tossed in twelve, and
Alice Duesing pitched in with eleven. Duesing also added game
highs of seven rebounds and three assists for the Lakers.
The loss drops the Cardinals to
4-16 (0-12 GLIAC) on the season, while the Lakers move to 16-3
(11-1 GLIAC). SVSU returns to action on Thursday (February 6)
with a road contest against Michigan Tech at 5:30p.m.
