Contest
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw
Valley State women's basketball team dropped its second straight
GLIAC match, falling 70-61 to Hillsdale on Monday (December 2).
Senior Erin Johnson (Saginaw,
Mich./Heritage HS) led SVSU with a season-high 16 points,
six rebounds, and three steals, while freshman Jessica Wilson
(Martin, Tenn./Westview HS) added ten points. No other
Cardinal reached double figures as SVSU committed 17 turnovers
and allowed 24 offensive rebounds.
"We made some good adjustments in
the second half which allowed for some great runs, but on several
occasions the turnovers just hurt us," said head coach Kim
Chandler.
SVSU grabbed an early 8-2 lead, capped
by sophomore Jennifer Hagstrom's (Cadillac, Mich.) jumper
in the paint, but Hillsdale later evened the score at eight apiece.
"Hillsdale was a preseason No. 1
pick in the South division and they have a great team, but we
jumped out 8-2 and I thought we should have kept pushing forward,"
claimed Chandler.
Hillsdale took a 15-14 lead at the 10:26
mark and never looked back, as four Chargers reached double-digits
in scoring. Stephanie Heid led the way with 16 points and 13 boards.
Caitlyn Kennedy finished with 13 points and 14 boards, while Jen
Newsome and Mary Wiesen had 17 and eleven points respectively.
For the match, SVSU held a 40.0% to 32.5% advantage
in shooting, but committed 17 turnovers to Hillsdale's nine. The
Chargers also held a 48-44 edge on the glass.
SVSU's record slips to 1-3 (0-2 GLIAC),
while Hillsdale improves to 4-1 (1-0 GLIAC) on the season.
SVSU will swing back into action on Thursday
night (December 2) when the Cardinals travel to play Ashland at
5:30p.m.
