SVSU Falls Short Against
No. 7 GVSU, 73-62
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Laurie Rehmann’s
23 points and seven rebounds lifted No. 7 Grand Valley State to
a 73-62 victory over Saginaw Valley State Saturday afternoon (Jan.
25) in the James E. O’Neill Arena. The loss was the Cardinals’
eighth straight and drops their overall record to 4-14 (0-10 GLIAC)
on the season, while the visiting Lakers improved to 17-2 (8-2
GLIAC).
Saginaw Valley took an early 12-6 lead,
but Grand Valley’s 11-2 run built an eleven-point halftime
lead (35-24) for the Lakers. SVSU went down by as many as 23 points
(59-36), but used a 17-4 run of it own, making the score 66-57
with a little over three and a half minutes remaining. The Cardinals
failed to draw any closer as the Lakers would convert their free
throws and hold on for the eleven-point victory.
Janine Guastella recorded twelve points,
and Julie Zeeff added eleven points and seven assists for GVSU.
Career high performances from both freshman
Elicia Kinner (Pellston, Mich.) and
sophomore Jennifer Hagstrom (Cadillac, Mich.)
led the Cardinals. Kinner scored 22 points, hitting 8-of-13 from
the field, while Hagstrom posted 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting.
The Cardinals also received nine boards from senior Erin
Johnson (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) and six
assists from senior Angie Stewart (Perry,
Mich.).
The Cardinals, who shot 44.4 percent (24-54),
had 13 assists, 36 rebounds, and committed 16 turnovers. GVSU,
who leads the GLIAC in scoring defense, had 10 steals, 17 assists,
29 rebounds, and 13 turnovers. The Lakers shot 47.3 percent, draining
26-of-55 and used a 22-4 edge in bench points.
The Cardinals will battle Northwood Thursday
night (Jan. 30) at 5:30 p.m. in Midland, Mich.
